In one week's time, I'll be back in the Alps, with my first visit to the Dolomites, so this seems as good a time as ever to post one from last year over in that direction!

Ana had a conference in Munich so it was an opportunity to tag along and explore some nearby spots, including Neuschwanstein Castle. The forecast was for incoming torrential rain a couple of hours after we got the rental car - so the race was on. I had this spot in mind all along, and after a knackering jog up the mountain, I managed about 5 minutes before the wetness really kicked in. Success!

Back down to the car it was, and a few hours sat in the car park... before venturing out again later on for some of the more famous views.

Second part of my backlog... Another one from after the eclipse up on Hasty Bank, towards the Wainstones. Still plenty of walkers walking through on their way back to their cars, so a bit of patience required... But I luckily got a gap at the same time as the sun found it's own gap.

After a baking hot day, it was actually surprisingly cool and very windy by this point, and the heather was blowing all over the place.

I've actually got a bit of a backlog for the first time in a while... let's see if I keep up with actually posting them though!

Over the weekend, we went and spent 3 days in Wasdale - edging ever closer to completing the Wainwrights. I'm up to 209/214 now - although I have to say, I think Yewbarrow will not be achieved anytime soon.

So whilst the sole purpose of the weekend was walking and we were often back at our campsite by sunset, I couldn't help snap this view of Great Gable on the way back to the car one evening.

A lot to report today... yesterday was a bit hectic - I bought my first new camera in 14 years, switching from Canon to Sony, and all the new tech that comes with such a time gap... and then due to a crash on the way to Clay Bank and plenty of detours... had to very much learn all the new things on the job, in a rush (we only arrived 10 minutes before the maximum eclipse).

I took both cameras, old and new, expecting to get there early and work with both to have some certainty in the old one to fall back on if needed, but with such little time I ended up just committing to the new one and hoping for the best, I've not even looked at the eclipse photos yet.

But here's one from a little later, in less of a rush. I'm still annoyed I only found this view a little too late, once the direct light had gone... but maybe I'll get back soon. It's one of those views where the composition just falls into place automatically - you immediately see it and know what to do.

I've been on my weather-related photos this week and just looked back at photos I've shared here, and, somehow, I never shared this.

This is from near the top of Theth-Valbona Pass in Albania. It's probably the most picturesque valley I've ever seen - but the rain set in quite soon after we reached the top and got our tourist snaps.

I ended up dropping my bag on the path and going off for a 'comfort break' when Ana shouted at me to look behind me... a very desperate run back up the scree, rifling through my bag to find the camera and snap anything before it disappeared. This is the one I got.

Even I thought I had missed it in the moment.

I never really shared enough from this day last autumn... it was a day primarily for walking, and was an extra-long one that I took way too long getting around due to the endless inversion views.

So we found ourselves here, very much in the dark but in a rush... still had more mountain to do... so I didn't get the tripod out and just stuck with trusting the power of computers these days to sort out the noise.

I believe, if memory serves me correctly... this is looking out across Harter Fell before our final walk up Pike O'Blisco.

Well... you all persuaded me... people do see things here... so here's one to really push the limits of Facebook, especially viewed on phones...

There's really no other way to make the most of this volcano view, We spent a few hours here perilously close to a group of Americans, on a tour, who somehow moved on just before sunset... allowing me to relax, but equally baffled by who they had booked for the tour.

It at least did reinforce that our expensive choice to rent a car rather than pay for tours did pay off. So that's a win.

First up... I am not saying this for attention or pity (or anything like that), I'm sure I just don't post enough. But that's down to a few things, the most important of which is that I am much more picky with when I think I've taken a good picture than I was 10 years ago.

Still, I average about 10 likes on here per photo, which just hardly seems worth the effort if so few people are seeing it. So please, if you do see it, like it, make sure you follow me... and go and click on my Instagram or website or what have you to keep up to date.

In the meantime, here's a dream come true from last month... Iguazu Falls in Brazil.

It would have been wrong to visit the Atacama Desert and not spend at least a little time taking advantage of the dark sky, so on our last night there, after another long day, we headed off into the desert above San Pedro for a couple of hours. It's absolutely unbelievable how easy it is to do astrophotography here... I'd been told it gets cold at night, but nope... beautifully warm, calm and lovely. It felt odd taking photos at night and not being rushed by immediately losing all sensation in your fingers.

It was also amazing to be able to see the Large Magellanic Cloud with the naked eye, before then realising that I also captured the Small Magellanic Cloud (bottom centre) with the camera.

An hour or so in, Ana decided she wanted to head back to the car (having not brought a headtorch), but I persuaded her against the idea... which was fortunate, as (ever disorganised) when we did finally head back, her phone battery died on her half way across the desert too. That could have been interesting.

Back from my three weeks in Chile... and finally a chance to take a look at some photos.

We spent 4 days in San Pedro de Atacama to begin with. Our first day was a write-off because the car we had booked was given to somebody else... but we still managed to squeeze in everything we wanted to see with impeccable timing... via our usual non-stop early start, late finish, exhausting holiday style.

This is the huge sand dune in Valle de la Muerte/Marte (death or Mars), looking towards the ever-present, and only possible focal point in this region, Licancabur volcano.
