The Galloway Hills is the latest event to fall, not because the sport is dying, but because it's under specific, identifiable strain.
And there's no villain here. Forestry bodies are balancing budgets and their own stakeholders. Motor clubs run on volunteers giving up their evenings for free. Competitors are enthusiasts, not corporations with big marketing budgets. Everyone's acting rationally in a system that's become harder to sustain.
"More money" is the obvious answer, and useless, since nobody's sitting on a surplus. But there's real opportunity in how the sport packages itself to attract sponsorship, and that's where some of the pressure could be relieved.
If it's useful, I'm happy to offer some free time to help events with their sponsorship proposals, nothing fancy, just what I've learned over a 20-year career in marketing. Get in touch if that sounds worthwhile.
