In 2019 told me she was the most awkward person on camera. Ever. Like, genuinely.

And I’m not going to lie. She really was awkward. Challengingly awkward at times. And I know she won’t mind me saying that.

But she’d seen one of my branding days - gorgeous location, hair and makeup, no one watching and thought, I could do that. Just about. She was mortified by the idea of being photographed in front of strangers.

So she came. And it was fine - better than fine actually.

And then she booked me again the following year. Different location, new things happening in her business. Still leading with the fact that she was awkward on camera.

And the year after that. Same story.

But somewhere along the way, a funny thing happened. She stopped being awkward (imagine that 🤭)

Obviously not overnight. And certainly not cos I said something clever or had some magic technique. Just gradually, shoot by shoot, she started suggesting poses. Telling me which photos would be useful and where she’d use them. Showing up knowing exactly what she needed. And importantly, actually using the images.

And you can see it in her face as you scroll back to 2019 - she actually looks more relaxed and confident.

That’s eight years of work. Eight years of showing up, letting herself be seen, building something.

I’ve spent years helping women get chosen - not just noticed.

Because what’s the point of being visible if you’re not getting booked, or selling your course or… I don’t know - making enough money to do the things you want to.

It’s just vanity.

And don’t get me wrong. I’ve done it too.

Remember that dark time late last year when I started doing silly reels just to get more likes… and I know they’re to make us look more relatable. But wow. I’m fed up of Instagram pushing us to do stuff that feels weird - in the ongoing hunt for ever more virality.

These days everybody can be seen easily enough.

But it’s what that equates to. The difference between being seen & being visible and being chosen & being remembered and being unforgettable.

I think that’s why I like that my clients have businesses that work in real life too.

I’m an opinionated ar****le.

Honestly. I have opinions about everything and I’m not scared to share them.

Is that an age thing? I AM well into middle age. And I do feel like I should get a modicum of acknowledgement for knowing a thing or two.

Or is it just that I’ve photographed enough women to know what’s actually true?

I’m not sure.

But what I DO know is that I’m sick of women feeling like being unphotogenic is a thing.

It’s not, lovely lady.

Someone just took a really sh*t photo of you. And it will keep happening because they’re not invested in you looking good.

I am.

I know it seems a strange thing to say. I mean Instagram was built for sharing photos…so I’ve always been at home here. And most brand photography is built around Instagram. Mine isn’t.

It’s built around the women who have real businesses - with websites, email lists, workshops, products and offers that actually need to be found, trusted and bought.
