Richard Bowes Photography Wildlife, landscape and architecture photography. Up close and personal with wildlife is my dream. I hope you find something to enjoy in my albums.

I worked as a Countryside Ranger for 18 years building on a childhood spent mucking about in fields and on archaeological digs run by my Dad so the outdoors is engrained in my being. I've combined graft and craft to make myself a good wildlife observer so it made sense to introduce photography to that. From the early days of 'there's a fox in this picture' Voigtländer 35mm slide photos through var

ious incarnations to the full face otters taken with a 100-400 Canon lens, I've been taking pictures since I was 7 years old. If you factor in architecture and topography there's a very rewarding triumvirate of subjects to point the camera at. I'm starting to have some very modest success in competitions and a couple of my photos are now being sold as greetings cards, it's another enjoyable way of sharing the fruits of my labours with others.

My muse this teatime has been the pretty little holly blue which has been drinking from the saturated moss at one of my ponds. I opted out of macro photography since the bed of nettles wasn't conducive!

The first appearance of two more favourites today, the commas are twirling up in amongst the trees in either courtship or territorial dances and the fairly rare, in my patch, painted lady is here too after not being seen last year.

The weather conditions definitely suit the small tortoiseshell butterflies this year. Double figures of them in the garden yesterday and today with, at one point, eight of them sharing the small lavender.

More of a snapshot than a photo but nice to finally record one of the Ichneuman flies which frequent my garden. This is the yellow striped Darwin fly, Ichneumon xanthorius, which, in common with most of the family, parasitises other insects to lay its eggs. This species targets butterflies and moths.

Visiting one of my favourite bridges, for yes I have such things, on a dreich Scottish day which suggested black and white would be a far better option than colour.
