As soon we pulled up at the park gates it started absolutely bucketing it down, so we sat in our cars for 5 minutes before deciding to just go for a pint. We chatted about life and weddings and aging bodies and art and in response to me asking about any specifics they’d like to see in their wedding photography, there weren’t any Pinterest boards or inspo poses - Jen and Adam pretty much just said “you’re an artist, we’re hiring you for you, we trust you, photograph it how you see fit”
I can’t actually explain how freeing it is when couples allow me to just run with it. It’s genuinely where my best work is made. Not working from a mental (or physical) shot list. Not living in my head checking off poses and pictures. But when I’m balls deep in the actual moment, responding to the stimulus of the environment I’m in on macro and - where the magic reaaaaally happens - micro level.
In photography college I always did my projects backwards. They always wanted us to “moodboard” first and for the life of me I couldn’t make myself do it, because I had nothing to respond to. How am I meant to tell you what I’m photographing and why when I haven’t got real life unfolding in front of me? I’d make the art then make the story up afterwards. Funny how much I wanted to be a “fine art” photographer and actively didn’t want to be a photojournalist. Funnier how I’m basically a photojournalist now who has the absolute honour of being paid to document some of peoples biggest moments. Funny how it’s the most meaningful work I’ve ever done. Funny how life works out, isn’t it?
Anyway, here’s what we made once the weather dried up a bit. I don’t usually share pre-wedding shoots on here, but these really make me smile and I can’t wait for these guy’s wedding at the end of the month ♥️
