It’s been a very busy week for SkyCam Newcastle.

Over the last few days I’ve completed 4 visits to wind farms on the west coast of Scotland — 3 for marketing footage and 1 for mapping — along with 4 solar panel sites spread across England, including 2 sites down in Kent.

That’s a lot of miles, a lot of flying, and a lot of data.

It’s also a good example of where SkyCam Newcastle now sits as a drone business. This isn’t just the odd roof inspection or one-off aerial photo job. We’re set up to deliver professional drone work on a large scale, across multiple sites, for clients who need reliable capture, useful outputs and a fast turnaround.

Mapping has become a particular focus.

I’ve built bespoke software and repeatable workflows that make large mapping projects much more efficient - from scoping and quoting, through to flying, processing and reporting.

For construction and renewable energy sites, that means clear monthly progress reports covering all elements of a site, as well as more detailed support where needed - rail crossings, water crossings, borrow pit measurements, access roads, hardstandings and other operational areas.

The goal with mapping is to capture the site properly, process the data efficiently, and produce useful information quickly - typically within a week of being on site.

For marketing footage, turnaround can be faster again, with edits available within 24–48 hours where required.

This week’s work has taken SkyCam from wind farms in Scotland to solar panel sites across England, with drone launches from ATV flatbeds, remote access, marketing footage, mapping data and everything in between.

And as a final note, SkyCam Newcastle was also audited by the CAA during the same period and passed with no notes.

That’s a small humble-brag, but it matters. The end results are the visible part, but the planning, paperwork, records, procedures, risk assessments and safe operating standards behind the scenes are what allow professional drone work to happen properly.

It's not about the drone. It's about solving problems.

As drone pilots, we have our own skillset, procedures and working practices - but that's just the way we get the drone in the air and plan our day.

What our clients use us for is incredibly varied. One day I can be filming solar panels as an inspection and the next trying to find a lost phone in a field. Then it might be a construction progress survey, marketing video, roof inspection or an FPV tour of a business.

Drones can often provide a safer, faster and more cost-effective solution than traditional methods – and they're incredibly flexible.

This is why video matters.

Photos are great… but a smooth flythrough lets people *feel* a space.

Whether it’s an Airbnb, bar, restaurant, gym, office or event venue, video gives potential customers a sense of layout, atmosphere and scale in a way static images just can’t.

This particular shoot became my longest indoor drone flythrough yet — over 3 minutes of continuous movement through an incredible property.

The challenge with shots like this is making them feel effortless:
• flying through tight spaces
• keeping movement smooth
• avoiding mirrors 😅
• transitioning between rooms naturally
• and making the whole thing feel cinematic rather than just “a drone flying about”

The end result is the sort of content that stops people scrolling.

Close enough to be a bike...

Following an upgrade from the DJI Avata 1 to the 2 - I took the opportunity to test it out with long-time collaborator - Andrew Nairns on a recent ride down some trails.

Andrew’s used to being filmed and knows not to react… but this time I got so close it caught him off guard and he had to turn around and check what was behind him.

Flying tight, twisty trails like this - with branches everywhere - isn’t easy. Doing it at speed while keeping your subject perfectly framed is even harder.

But this is exactly how I sharpen my skills.

Because if I can confidently fly through trees at 15–20mph…
then flying smoothly and safely through your property at 2mph is second nature.

It’s all part of delivering professional results.

(but honestly - it’s also just a lot of fun.)
