Unseen Images
Rev Richard Hainsworth

It was a pleasure welcome Richard back to NCC for his latest talk which was split into two completely different genres.

In part one Richard took us to Morocco. A trip he had made alone to pursue his passion for Astro photography a genre that by its very nature often sees those who follow their passion spend long hours out in remote “Dark Sky” areas.

On this trip Richard was in an area of the Atlas Mountains close to the edge of the Sahara Desert. He talked about and shared some images with us that gave us a flavour of what life is like for the people who called this barren and desolate landscape “Home” which was fascinating. what was also fascinating was that despite it’s remoteness the condition of the roads were superb and certainly put our crumbling road network to shame.

Richard brought the first half of the evening to a close by showing us some absolutely breathtaking Astro Images that he took in the desert under what he described as the darkest and biggest skies he’d ever experienced. Such was the success that this environment brought Richard, he made the decision that this was the right time bring the curtain down on his Astro Photography AND also to sell all his Astro equipment, as nothing in the future would surpass what he’d achieved on this trip.

After the break, Richard introduced us to his “New Photography Obsession”

Following his decision to sell al his Astro gear Richard decided to pursue Portraiture but with a twist. Along with fellow photographers, they share the costs of studio & model hire and enjoy making “Creative Portraits” but rather relying on purely the use of software technologies such as Photoshop. They experiment with a range of “Creative Techniques” such as creative props, multi exposures, intentional camera movement etc! Richard went on to show us a wide range of these images along with detailed explanations of how they were taken/created.

A thoroughly informative, enjoyable and inspirational evening.

Tonight we welcome a return visit by Lynda Haney who is giving us a talk on creating composites. We were so impressed with the first talk that she delivered to us last season that we wasted no time in inviting her back to give us a more in-depth talk about how she produces her fantastic and award winning images. Guests are welcome. There is a small charge of £2.50 per person.

5th Club Competition
Judge:- Susan Clarke

On Tuesday evening we welcomed judge Susan Clarke who had travelled from Prestatyn to judge our annual mono competition. Members are invited to enter up to 3 Prints and 2 Projected Digital Images. Susan had seen the digital versions of both prints and Projected Digital Images on her machine at home and had scored them and prepared detailed and extensive analysis of each image. She had also prepared edited versions of some images to illustrate how she felt they could be improved.
On arrival she had a cursory glance through the prints and set up her seat alongside the print stand. She explained that, as modern cameras made it easier to take technically good images, the main thing that she was looking for was impact and images that conveyed the message that the author was trying to get across. She said from her quick glance at the prints they seemed to be of a very high standard with mounts that went well with the prints.
She read out her detailed and comprehensive analysis of each of the 28 prints pointing out where she felt a crop would have made it stronger, or presenting a colour image would have been better than mono. She retained 10 for further consideration subsequently awarding points as follows:-

20 Points
“3 Way Conversation” by Andrew Charlesworth CPAGB

19 Points
“Chaos” by Julene Evans
“Best Foot Forward” by Denise Compton
Seaside Groyne” by Alison Wood
“Gothic Princess” by Denise Compton

18 Points

“Sinking Deeper” by Bryan Averill HON CPE BPE2
“Otter Trio” by Wendy Williams CPAGB Hon CPE
“Cool Cat” by Wendy Williams CPAGB Hon CPE
“The Shard From Platform 5” by Andrew Charlesworth CPAGB

After a short break for refreshments the judging of the 30 Projected Digital Images commenced. Susan had put these into a PowerPoint presentation so that she was able to show her edited versions of a few of the images that she felt could have been improved. She gave the same highly detailed critique of each image and retained 9 for further consideration. She subsequently awarded points as follows:-

20 Points
“Happy Days” by John Kay

19 Points
“And It Was This Big” by John Kay
“Flying For 80 Years” by David Hoyle

Unfortunately we have been told that Gary Groucutt can no longer make it to the Club on Tuesday 10th March 2026 so we are now showing a slideshow of images entered into L & CPU Competitions, and having a more leisurely viewing of the images from last week's Competition.

Rory Trappe

Rory was our third and final Guest Speaker via Zoom of the season, joining us Blaenau Ffestiniog in North Wales and in addition to the club members in attendance at Regents Park, it was lovely to be joined by John & Jean Kay from their holiday in Spain.

The first half of Rory’s talk took us to The Mach Loop in North Wales a series of valleys in the area between Machynlleth, Barmouth and Dolgellau that is used as a strategic “Low level Training” area for Military Aircraft, not only by The RAF but also The USA, Canadian and Belgian Airforces.

Rory has been photographing military aircraft from a variety of vantage points around The Mach Loop for a number of years now and as such has accumulated a large number of images that he not only shared with us, but, was also able to include a lot of detailed information around each one. Over the years, his presence on The Mach Loop and the publication of his images has led to him forging friendships with a number of pilots who have requested copies of images of their aircraft.

After the break Rory took us on a journey around his homeland in North Wales via some of the beautiful landscape images he’s taken. What was interesting was that he said the majority of these landscapes were taken with Telephoto lenses which were his preferred choice. Some of the beautiful locations he’s photographed over the years he’s visited on numerous occasions and was able to show us how these locations look through the different seasons which was fascinating and contributed a very enjoyable evening.
