A real treat today to be kindly hosted by Laurie (skipper), Reuben and Isaac aboard the restored Thames Sailing Barge, Raybel (c1920), on a gentle cruise along the Swale beside her salt marshes to the Sheppey Crossing and Kings Ferry, finishing with a return to Garrison Point under full sail alone.

We were joined by Olwen Belgrove of the Zoological Society London (ZSL) who, as part her work with the Transforming the Thames project, shared her knowledge on the leaps forward made since the nineteen fifties - when the area was declared biologically sterile - around the increased health of our salt marsh / estuarine environment and its overall blossoming biodiversity.

Also aboard was artist Roger Skipper of Epping, a long time follower of Raybel's restoration, who had kindly donated three of his works to Raybel Charters for auction to support the project. All in all a wonderfully serene, positive, and privileged experience of an area and heritage we should all cherish and be proud of. Thank you very much to all, and of course to Raybel herself.

A pair of images I took from a ferry that speak to me about the heat, landscape, serenity, and a little piece of calm I found during a moment of travel in my life. I found each end of this short trip between two ports to be frantic, far too alive with loud voices, sweat, urgency, thick air, impatience, queues and suit cases that bump into legs without apology. In the midst, taxi drivers, ferry captains, folk in uniform and police, all doing their best to corral the pack of us from here to there and across their border with a kindness that was admirable and worthy of reward. Although wearied by the perpetual kerfuffle of being in a hub or funnel of travel, I felt a certain wisdom and serenity of age for the first time in my life, able to observe and almost enjoy the actions and energy around me. A moment in my forty-eighth year spent on the Adriatic, quietly enjoying a respite in the breeze with not many thoughts at all.
