Spirit Lands is a collection of stories from Nepal, Ladakh, and Ethiopia. It features tales and personal experiences from some of my favourite places on this earth.

'There are places on Earth, which seem not to be of Earth. They seem to sit just be the sky, and they hold secrets and lessons that other places do not. They are places that can heal, and those that can cause shifts within us. I have found that they are of places of intense spirituality, but also places where nature itself plays the role of a higher power. Lands where the grandness of the mountains, the oceans, and the skies make us feel insignificant'.

A snippet from the introduction. Thank you so much to everyone who has bought a copy, they are available here: https://www.annapurnamellorphotography.com/prints-zine

Hello! I recorded a podcast with Alina, the founder of Bell Collective - a collective of female travel photographers which I am part of. We chatted about travelling solo in India as a woman, how to get work in travel photography and issues surrounding being a female travel photographer. You can listen at all the usual places you can listen to podcasts - here's the Spotify link. I also recommend listening to the previous episodes which feature some wonderful female photographers.

Listen to this episode from Bell Collective podcast on Spotify. In today's episode host Alina Rudya talks to English photographer Annapurna Mellor. They discuss solo female travel in India and the ethical issues of photographing strangers. Anna will share her experience about approaching magazine ed...

I wrote an article for Remote Lands, Inc. about hiking through the Markha Valley in Ladakh, India. The hike is one of the most popular in Ladakh, although when I did it in early October, we saw no other travellers on the trail. Thanks to my wonderful guide Chos, we were able to stay in local homes each night, making traditional dishes and learning about farming in the valley.

After warming up on the Sham Valley, Annapurna Mellor takes her exceptional camera for one of Ladakh’s most famous hikes: the Markha Valley Trek.

At sunrise every morning, two young monks climb to the rooftop of Thiksey Monastery in Ladakh, India and blow through shells to create a bellowing horn sound which awakes the valley, and calls the other monks to prayer. Red robes flutter through the courtyards and run into the Gompa below, as the sun rises over the Himalayas and awakes the Indus Valley.

Finnish Lapland during January is one of the best places and times to see the Northern Lights in the world. But it's never guaranteed. You need clear skies, low light pollution, and solar activity to make it happen. They can come at anytime, and for our 2 clear nights I stood outside in -25 degree weather waiting for the sky to dance. Thankfully, when it comes, it's more than worth it. These photos will give you a glimpse of what it's like - but to see it with your own eyes is something else.

A few weeks ago I headed off to Finland with Intrepid Travel to shoot their Finnish Lapland winter trip. I've never been a fan of the cold and was a bit worried about how cold I might be in Lapland. Thankfully, the beauty of the place more than makes up for the fact that my eyelashes froze in the -20 degree weather. It was a spectacular trip, where we hiked up fells in thick snow, visited a reindeer farm, went on an epic husky ride, got rather obsessed with Finnish sauna culture, and enjoyed every delicious, locally sourced dish we ate. Lapland is an amazing destination, and I recommend it to everyone looking for something a little different.

Oh, and we also saw the Northern Lights... but I'll wait until tomorrow to post those photos!

At the end of my India trip, I knew I wanted to return to Agra to see the Taj Mahal. I hadn't been to India's most iconic building since my first trip to India over 5 years ago. I found this Paul Theroux quote which describes visiting the monument better than I ever could...

'The Taj Mahal is something else. It hardly matters that it is so difficult to describe because just looking at it you are certain you will never forget it. It is not merely a visual experience, but an emotional one - its pure symmetry imparts such strong feeling; and it is a spiritual experience, too; for the Taj Mahal is alone among buildings I have seen. It is not merely lovely; it looks as if it has a soul'. Paul Theroux from The Imperial Way.
