Can you teach our sixth form how to create cinematic digital landscapes with a dystopian feel…?

Erm…. YES :)

When I run workshops it’s usually photography or lighting techniques so this was a great challenge for me - and will be a wonderful opportunity for the students to learn aspects of Photoshop like selecting, layering, warping, colour layers, using colour to create narrative, emotion and atmosphere.

Though my main passion is portraits and people photography with very simple/ little retouching, my background is in painting so it’s been great to have chance to play whilst preparing for the workshop.

For the observant, you’ll notice the shadow under the person is in the wrong direction (same direction as the landscape but different direction to the light on the person). Rookie error ;) Instead of correcting it, it’ll be a good learning point in the class.

Both of these photos were popular on my Facebook profile.

My friends and contacts loved them. I got loads of lovely comments and compliments on both.

That got me wondering…

How much difference does a professional photo actually make when you’re using it for business?

So I ran an experiment.

I uploaded both photos to Photofeeler Same person. Same jumper. Similar hair. Similar smile.

The only real difference? One was taken during a branding shoot by the brilliant Vicki | Brand Photographer & Visibility Strategist The other was a selfie after I’d had my hair done and thought I looked quite nice 🔥😄

The results were fascinating (swipe to see).

PhotoFeeler asks complete strangers to rate your photos. It’s subjective, of course, but that’s exactly what makes it interesting.

Because your potential clients start out as strangers too.

The professional photo scored significantly higher for professionalism and competence.

The selfie? Below average performance. Fifty people rated it. Eight people even took the time to comment that it looked “unprofessional”.

Ouch.

I still love that selfie (and my hair😂) It’s a great Facebook photo.

But Facebook friends already know me.

The people landing on my website or LinkedIn don’t.

First impressions count.

If you’re curious how your own photos are coming across, I’d recommend giving PhotoFeeler a go. You might be surprised by what strangers see.

And if your business photos are a few years old (or your favourite one is actually a selfie… 😜) I can help.

I tried to make a reel of all the women I’ve worked with recently. Hours of trying to match clips to audio, and a divorce later, I’ve given up….

Instead of faffing with a reel, I should have just posted this portrait of brilliant Faye Watts, co-founder of FUSE ACCOUNTANTS

If anyone sums up the theme of International Women’s Day - Give as gain - it’s her.

I met Faye many years ago at one of my first ever networking meetings. She is generous with her time, energy, knowledge and experience, and supports women with a passion.

Back then, she was an advocate for my work and my business when I was too full of imposter syndrome to feel wholly confident doing it for myself.

All these years later (too many to count!) I’m so happy to still have her as a client and a friend.

When we lift women we lift everyone.

And on IWD I celebrate all of the women
who created space and those who continue to shape the world in wonderful ways. 🙌

What are your photos saying about you and your business?

I love to capture how it FEELS to work with you.

That might include coo slippers and carrots, who knows….

I really enjoyed working with . She has such a joyful, empowering presence. Can you feel it?

Engaging photos in the right colours and styles can make all the difference to how excited you feel to be ‘visible’.

It’s been wonderful collaborating with The Natural Stylist - and working with on their new brand photos.

Do these photos help you feel real connection and trust?

Spending time with these fantastic women reminded me why I love this collaboration with so much. It’s our opportuntiy to help three women to feel more confident in who they are and what they do – not shinier just more themselves.

Three women. Three very different worlds.

Anna at holds people through charity work that’s emotional, complex and deeply people-based.

Mahalia feeds people – literally – with food rooted in heritage, care, and nourishment.

Alex handles artwork that carries beauty, memories, meaning.

Different sectors. Different energy. But the same responsibility: their clients trust them to care deeply.

And that’s what these photos had to do too.

Not just “look professional”
Not “smile nicely”.
But ‘feel’ right.

Calm. Grounded. Warm.
Capable without being flashy.
Intentional. Human.

Good personal brand photos give people a sense of who you’ll be to work with before they ever meet you.

All three came in confident in their work — but nervous about being photographed. It was wonderful seeing them feel fabulous in bolder colours and the outfits they’d chosen with Annabel’s guidance. Then watching them let go and relax in front of the camera, knowing they were in safe hands.

And the feedback afterwards said it all, ‘these look like me, but a bolder, more confident, more me ‘me’ than I ever expected to see in my photos’.

Finally having photos that they love. And photos they are proud to use for their business.

If you’re a woman building something meaningful, and you’ve been making do with selfies or non-professional photos that don’t quite fit anymore… we’d love to help 🥰
