Afterimages

There are moments when memories feel more persistent than presence itself. I’m sure you have experienced this. Afterimages refers to that peculiar state of mind.
All the images are experiments with in-camera double exposures.

Feeling stuck in routine or craving a bit more spark in daily life?

My latest blog, Eighty Per Cent Full, One Hundred Per Cent Alive, explores how mindful restraint and creative curiosity can shape the way we eat, think and grow.

If you’re interested in slowing down, staying curious, and keeping that inner hunger alive, have a read on my website.

What is real — and what is merely an image of the real?

Magritte’s “This is not a pipe” once made us question what we see — but what happens when we turn that question toward photography itself?

In my latest post, Not a Pipe, I explore the uneasy space between truth and illusion, memory and representation.

Breakfasts at Maribel – Premiere Announcement

I’m thrilled to share more about my new project, Portraits for No One – a series that blends short stories, fine art photography, and narration into surreal, dreamlike video impressions.

Each episode (7–10 minutes long) explores themes of solitude and belonging, altruism and inner courage, and the search for consolation and renewal. The magical realism of the writing meets the surrealism of the images to create a multi-layered metaphor of human experience.

The first video, Breakfasts at Maribel, premieres on Thursday, 20th November 2025 on my YouTube channel: youtube.com/

It features fifty photographs and one actress in many roles — from traveller to dream dweller — in a meditation on identity and transformation.

Follow for sneak peeks, stills, and the premiere link.

Impressions: Fréjus

Festival de la Photographie Surréaliste et Créative — or, if you prefer, the Surreal and Creative Photography Festival in Fréjus. A group exhibition. My photographs on display.

It feels strange, almost unreal, to see my work hanging here. I brought images from two earlier projects, both of which now feel distant, dated, perhaps even irrelevant. Standing in front of them, I find myself uneasy. When someone asks me to talk about the pieces on camera, that unease multiplies. I have no desire to show these works, and even less to discuss them. Yet I speak. And, as I do, it all feels like a slow-motion disaster I can’t quite step away from.

Portraits for No One – A New Series

What happens when original short stories and fine art photography collide?
‘Portraits for No One’ is my new project: a series of 7–10 minute video impressions where narration, monochrome surrealism, and literary inspiration converge.
Each story, though rooted in real events, becomes a universal metaphor—strangely familiar, never literal.
Themes of solitude, belonging, altruism, and hope run through every frame, inviting you to reflect and connect.

The premiere episode, ‘Breakfasts at Maribel’, launches Thursday, 20th November.

The Arrival

When my grandfather was forty, there came a knock at his door. German soldiers stood on the threshold and told him, quite simply, that he no longer lived there. He had two hours to gather his belongings and leave, taking with him his wife and three children.

At more or less the same time, on the opposite side of the country, my great-grandfather watched his jewellery shop being looted and destroyed by Russian soldiers. He too was forced to abandon everything he had built. Both families had the ground pulled from beneath their feet by the same invisible force that reshaped the face of Europe.

My own experience was, of course, nothing like as harrowing or dramatic. Yet, decades later, when Europe opened up and the borders of possibility widened, I too decided to begin anew in a foreign land. I was almost forty when I packed my life into a few bags and left with my family, not knowing what awaited us on the other side.

Replaceable Faces

One evening, studying the mask he had found in the theatre, he began to wonder whether a face might be more persuasive than words or gestures. With resin and cloth, he shaped new ones: a laughing face to draw her into shared delight; a face of quiet sorrow to invite her sympathy; a face of noble patience for those long afternoons when she would not meet his eyes.

This fragment is from ‘Replaceable Faces’, part of my ongoing project ‘Portraits for No One’ — a fusion of magical realism stories and surreal photography.

My aim with this project is to create something that goes beyond storytelling or visual art — an immersive experience where words and images intertwine, each enriching the other.

If you’d like to know what becomes of Octavio, I’d love to share the full story and accompanying photographs with you.
