Final frame (4 of 4) from my November 2020 Oxford Street walk.

Back in 2020, catching a ten-second gap with no buses or taxis in the middle of Oxford Street felt eerie. Now that the stretch between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street is permanently pedestrian-only, standing right in the middle of the road is simply how the street works every day.

Now that you have seen both versions side by side this week, what do you think? Do you prefer the energy of the red buses under the lights, or the open pedestrian avenue?

Part 3 of 4 from our Oxford Street archive series.

Two Route 55 buses passing the Oxford Circus Underground roundel beneath the Christmas lights in November 2020. With the central stretch of Oxford Street between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street now pedestrian-only and bus routes diverted onto neighbouring streets, frames like this already belong to a different chapter of the West End.

If you have walked down Oxford Street since it went traffic-free, what do you think of the change so far?

Oxford Street between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street is now pedestrian-only, with red buses and black cabs diverted off that central stretch for good.

I shot this 1.6-second exposure at Oxford Circus on a November night in 2020, waiting by the "LOOK RIGHT" stencil on the kerb while the 159 cut a bright red ribbon beneath the Christmas lights. It feels strange realising this exact scene is already London history.

What do you think of Oxford Street going walk-only? Will you miss seeing the red double-deckers running under the Christmas lights, or was it time to give the street back to pedestrians?
