Forcing myself to capture every stage because the months are just flying by. Kyteler is now 5 months old. That is insane to me because it feels like just yesterday she was born! But here’s proof you don’t just have to capture the newborn stage, every stage is so amazing and I love this phase where they are just a squishy smiley little chunk!

This gorgeous family came all the way from London to Southampton for their newborn session as I haven't been travelling to London with Kyteler so little. I'm so grateful they did as their images turned out so beautifully! Luckily stunning chunk was such a star (even after a long drive) during her session and we got such a variety for her gallery!

Posing in front of a photographer for a maternity session can seem scary, I get it as I get nervous too. When pregnant, our bodies undergo so many changes, we don't feel well, we are exhausted, we are uncomfortable in our new, changed form which can make one feel self-self-conscious. We see these perfect images of pregnant women confidently posing in front of the camera with their bump out and think, "How will I know how to pose like that?" My job is to teach you, to guide you and to make you feel as comfortable as possible with me so that you can bring out a quiet confidence within yourself. I don't take it lightly that you stand in front of my camera at such a monumental stage in your life, I'm just eternally grateful I get to capture it.

When I’m 80, the moments I’ll want to go back to are each of my children inside my belly.

The first little kicks inside, the wondering who they would be and then hearing that first cry while I started to memorise the little face that I would fall so deeply in love with.

When I’m 80, I’ll be thinking of the start of new life and how birthing my children was the start of mine.

My favourite type of maternity sessions are indoors- in my cosy studio or in your home. We don’t have to worry about the weather or people around us, just a calm, relaxing session with music playing in the background. My little piece of Heaven.

Twin sessions just feel extra magical don’t they? Just the loveliest session in my little Southampton studio. Cosy season is well and truly here!

I bought my very first indoor plants today. Yes I’m 37 and never had proper indoor plants. We did try to grow a sunflower indoors that Ondine got at school but Byron our cat destroyed it so we will see how these do. I did buy cat safe plants because he does chomp on flowers etc if he can get near them.

I’m booking quite a few maternity sessions in my studio this Autumn and winter and I can’t wait for the cosy studio season! I’m really enjoying slowly getting back to work (only in the studio right now with Kyteler so little) and feeling creative again. Remember it is best to book your maternity session for around 32-35 weeks pregnant! I’m currently booking maternity and newborn sessions into March right now. So excited!

My In-Home Newborn Photography Guide is almost done! Been working on this one for so long! A guide that discusses all aspects of shooting in homes, including my newborn posing workflow with diagrams that show you exactly where the light needs to be and where everything needs to be positioned for each pose. This is for those who learn better by reading (oh hey me! 🙋‍♀️) rather than video or in person workshops!

It is funny to think that some photographers think that “natural light” photographers only use natural light because they don’t know how to use flash/strobe lighting properly. I used studio lighting for over 5 years and while it is great for consistency and not having to worry on a dark day, I went back to natural light because I prefer it for my style. I love the grain, the ease of movement, the organic look and the warmth I’m able to achieve with it. I love the imperfection.

Do you struggle with getting enough variety of baby alone for your newborn sessions?

When I first started photographing newborns, I felt all over the place in sessions. Having a simple posing workflow that focuses on gentle transitions changed everything. It gives me a solid plan and helps babies stay content while getting a variety of gentle newborn portraits for the gallery.

Now I can move through sessions with a clear plan which helps to shorten sessions and makes it easier on baby. Link in my bio for my online workshop!

This little job of mine makes my heart sing. I’ll be resuming 1-2-1 mentoring in November if anyone is ready to book. Being a photographer can be so isolating because of all the editing and because we don’t have a work team so I love being able to meet so many photographers. Being able to chat to this little Instagram community daily about photography and motherhood has really saved me! .
