Growing up, Notting Hill was one of my favorite films. I dreamed of visiting the neighborhood one day and visiting the travel bookshop it was based on. In 2004, on my second trip to Britain, we managed a visit and I loved the bookstore, visiting several times over the proceeding years. I bought my first Ordnance Survey Maps there, which I still treasure to this day. The film was both a blessing and a curse to Notting Hill. It helped turn a formerly unfashionable area of London, into one of the wealthiest but that pushed out a lot of small local businesses. The place I visited in 2004 is nothing like it was the last time I was there in 2017. The Travel Bookshop is long gone, the owners gave up, but there’s still a bookshop in the space, thankfully, now called the Notting Hill Bookshop.

About this series: In less than 100 days, I will depart for Britain for the first time in almost four years. I’m very excited about this.
