Second day of the Mediterranean Film Festival. We were up at Fort Manoel in Valletta, this crumbling, beautiful old fortress overlooking the harbour. Golden hour light creeping in, gala evening just beginning. I’d just found this wild little spot behind the stage; half ruin, half film set, and I knew that’s where I wanted to shoot Jared Harris.
As we set up, I clocked a group of firemen off to the side, casually watching things unfold. Malta’s finest, just hanging out, keeping an eye on the event. I looked at Jared. He looked at them. Without saying a word, we both knew they had to be in the shot.
A few nods and a bit of Maltese charm later, the firemen were suddenly part of the portrait session. Jared absolutely leaned into it, and the whole thing took on this brilliant, slightly surreal energy: award-winning actor, ancient fort, and a gang of grinning firemen in hi-vis.
One of my favourite unexpected moments of the festival.
