6/6 🇬🇷☦️

Agion Oros (the Holy Mountain).

This marks the final post of this journey with a few glimpses from Hilandar 🇷🇸, Esphigmenou (the northernmost of the Athonite monasteries), Konstamonitou Monasteries and Karyes.

Over 700 photographs later, it is clear that Mount Athos cannot be captured. There are places where the camera is not allowed, and many more still left unseen. Perhaps a lifetime is not enough and there is a lot to be said. What is certain is that the Holy Mountain is not a touristic place you visit, but a sacred land that quietly receives you with the blessings of the Most Holy Theotokos, strips away everything unnecessary, and returns you to Orthodoxy, to Christ and to yourself. An, at least, once-in-a-lifetime journey worth taking not only for Orthodox Christians, but especially so. God willing, and through the prayers of the Most Holy Theotokos, I shall return one day.

All my Orthodox brothers and sisters observe the Great and Holy Friday today, the most solemn day of the year, commemorating the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ. Today is a strict fast day of mourning and spiritual reflection. May we pause and reflect on His sacrifice, His humility, and the depth of His love.

Agion Oros (the Holy Mountain).

Saint Athanasius the Athonite founded the monastic community on Mount Athos, which has since become the greatest centre of Orthodox Christian monasticism. He died around the year 1000 in an accident, killed by falling masonry when the cupola of a newly built church collapsed, and was later glorified as a saint. During his lifetime, alongside the Great Lavra (Megísti Lávra), three other monasteries were established: Iviron, Esphigmenou, and Vatopedi.

⛪️ Romanian Skete of Prodromos (belonging to the Great Lavra Monastery, founded in 963 AD by Saint Athanasius, considered the mother monastery of Mount Athos; around 25 Romanian monks live here, and its library holds over 5,000 printed books and 130 manuscripts, primarily in Romanian)

⛪️ Great Lavra (Megísti Lávra) (the oldest and highest-ranking monastery on Mount Athos, home to over 300 monks)

⛪️ Monastery of Philotheou (founded by the Blessed Philotheus at the end of the 10th century; around 60 monks reside here)

Agion Oros (The Holy Mountain).

There’s a lot to say, but the main point is that only once you withdraw from the noise, you will hear what has always been speaking. In this silence, a man comes face to face not with the world, but with himself.

The journey continues towards Monastery of Iviron (read about the ‘Portaitissa’ one of the most revered icons on Mount Athos, kept here), the Spring of the Theotokos, the Spring of Saint Athanasius the Athonite, the Great Lavra, the Romanian Skete of Prodromos, the Cave of Saint Athanasius the Athonite, and Monastery of Philotheou.
