Discarded chandeliers, words & champagne smiles.

Alright Insta. It’s not the enormous back catalogue of professional bits I should be uploading, but it was a fun weekend in the rain.

It is incumbent upon artists to explore cultural moments and also to reject them. When I began imagining this image, for example, I thought it just was a playful visual quip about messy nights out. Something I’ve been exploring a lot lately. But in retrospect I think there is more to it.

So while I’d love to drop this with a low-risk pithy lol, the truth is that I am deeply stirred by a nostalgia for a (perhaps-half-imagined) time of joy and drunken revelry and mischief. That while I keenly recognise the problems that alcohol can and often does bring (hence the dancing pole on a tray and discarded wedding ring: warning against both misogyny and poor judgment) — at the same time I am dissatisfied by the broader movement I see towards cultural sobriety and risk averseness.

It’s complex, I know. And deeply personal. I respect individual sobriety and abstinence greatly. I know too well the problems that excessI’ve alcohol or drug consumption can bring. But I came of age, literally and creatively and professionally, in a golden time of drinking (and drunken) splendour and generosity and, for me at least, affordability and playfulness. And I miss that world deeply.

All of which is to say that this is still a simple visual quip about getting messy. But that it also comes from somewhere meaningful and unresolved. And I wanted to share that.

Extraction

Welcome to your Five Star Surgical Experience. Whether we’re putting bits inside your fragile mortal frame or taking them out, you can rest assured that we will do so with the utmost professionalism, pride and style.

I spoke with someone before my surgery who said that after his private hip replacement (private hip-replacement as opposed to private-hip replacement) he could have ordered filet mignon three times a day had he wanted, and that he was drinking lattes straight after coming to.

I’m sufficiently working class British that I’m in awe of the NHS daily and have an institutional distrust for privatised anything, including healthcare.

But it got me imagining how a truly luxurious 5* surgical process might look and more importantly feel? A boutique hotel with a surgical theatre and a renowned mixologist on hand? Perhaps something a little fetishistic? Hints of the cosmetic surgery scene in The Great Beauty maybe?

Viscera

Knowing that two grown men reached deep inside my body through a foot-long incision of flowing blood and unyielding muscle to yank and hammer and saw at my skeleton has been fascinatingly unsettling and unsettlingly fascinating.

I imagine a ruby red balloon filled with a gelatinous sea of gore and an unruly army of hard marbles and more wet-filled balloons. My insides are no longer an organisational abstract; the clean and compartmentalised illustrations from school books and NHS pamphlets. Everything in its right place. Just so.

No, this is me coming to terms with my internal messiness. I am a sentient sack of stick bones and free-flowing viscera.
