Back to where they belong 💙

On the 21st July and after weeks of rehabilitation at RSPCA West Hatch Wildlife, I photographed 22 juvenile gulls as they took their next big step back to the wild ☺️

Members of the West Hatch team arrived at the centre just after sunrise to catch up the gulls for a final health check, making sure each bird was fit and ready for release. They then transported the birds to Steart Marshes Nature Reserve.

Then came the moment everyone had been working towards. The gulls were released together, taking to the skies and heading out across the marshes!

I’ve got a lot of images to share from this summer, and so many of them reflect the extreme temperatures that both RSPCA England and Wales animals and staff have had to contend with.

It’s been an incredibly busy season at RSPCA West Hatch Wildlife, and the centre admitted more than 600 gulls. Alongside their already busy rehabilitation routines staff have also had the added challenge of keeping the animals cool and comfortable during some exceptionally high temperatures.

To keep the gulls comfortable, they provided them with paddling pools, sprinklers and plenty of fresh water to help them to beat the heat and the gulls certainly seemed to appreciate it!

For the staff, the heatwaves have meant working in some incredibly challenging conditions too 🥵

Preparing for take off ✈️

These swifts are soon going to be taking on a lengthy migration, all the way to Africa. But after falling from their nests, a stop at RSPCA West Hatch Wildlife is necessary.

Swifts require very specialist care, and thrive with one-to-one hand rearing. That's where our dedicated staff come in, volunteering their own time at home, to provide regular feeds during evenings and even their days off.

It's such an honour to know that we're part of such a special journey, ensuring they're healthy, and that their feathers are in perfect condition for their intercontinental flight!

Veterans, not vermin 🐦

Pigeons are remarkable creatures. As the early day Twitter back in 1914, they were our main method of long-distance communication, flying at speeds of 60mph.

Since then, we've discovered they have lifelong partners, can distinguish between photographic and cubist art, and can recognise themselves in mirrors - something most of our own pets can't even do. And can we just take a minute to gaze at the iridescent neck feathers and sweet connection between this 'vermin' couple...

So it's time to celebrate the humble pigeon. Share your favourite thing about them below!
