Hey everyone šŸ‘‹

We’ve had some fairly big changes in the last few months, and posting on IG/FB etc hasn’t been high priority for us.

Anyway - without getting into detail, we’re having to sell Lottie šŸ˜ž
We’re going to be really sorry to see our wonderful van go, but we’re equally sure she’ll make someone else very happy.

Before we get her listed on the usual places, we thought we’d give you lovely lot a chance to get in touch if you’d be interested - so drop us a DM if you are!

It’s about time that we confessed. We’re geeks. Completely. And we’ve been looking out for Lord of the Rings filming locations on our travels - there’s been a few already, but we couldn’t miss the chance whilst in Wellington to visit Mount Victoria and spot two iconic locations.

First photo - where the four hobbits are nearly discovered on the road by a Nazgƻl and hide amongst tree roots.
Second photo - where Frodo sits at the start of Fellowship, reading a book and smoking a pipe whilst waiting for Gandalf.

WARNING - we reserve the right to find more filming locations in the next month šŸ¤“šŸ“½ļøšŸŽ„

Wellington’s Lambton Harbour, watched over by Solace in the Wind.

After our first day, the wind calmed down and we were able to walk along the waterfront again and enjoy this stunning view of the business district.

It’s not often you’ll see a picture of a staircase on IG.

But - please join us in admiring the beauty of this staircase!

It’s in the Old Government Buildings in Wellington, and we think it’s stunning - it was originally held together with bits of wire and metal struts in order to provide the needed support, and never reached the potential aspired to by its creator.

An overhaul though allowed modern engineering technology to be installed, and now the staircase is self supporting and all the better for it.

The really amazing thing about this building however is the fact that it’s made from timber - something you’d never guess from it’s front facade.

What’s a city without a great big sign telling you where you are?

Much hilarity ensued when Gin was told to ā€œgo and be the Iā€. We’re not sure if it was the wind, the time on the road or maybe the few beers we’d had by that point, but it took a few minutes to get to the first photo!

But yes - is very much known for its wind, and boy did it deliver on our first day!

We had a few days off the road staying in Waikanae Beach, wandering the sand, chilling out and of course - planning!

Our for New Zealand looks like we’ve lost the plot - but we pin things to go and see, places to camp for the night, where to get water, things to stop at the roadside and gawp at, etc etc etc.

It’s been invaluable on our travels so far - and allows us to locate all the wonderful places Gin finds in the pile of guide books, leaflets, brochures etc that we pick up from the I-sites dotted around New Zealand.

Anyway - we’ve planned Wellington next - best get our compass out and make sure we’re headed the right way šŸ˜‚

Brief stop in Palmerston North (we can’t seem to get ā€˜South’ right!) after a few nights with no signal.

We had a brilliant meal at the highly recommended Arranged Marriage (yes, that’s a restaurant. Really!) a good wander around the town and then decided to jump on scooters to go and see the He Ara Kotahi bridge.

Now, our last experience of electric scooters was a few years ago in Paris. It did not go well (Parisians hate them, for reference), so we were a little concerned. But - much hilarity ensued as foot/cycle traffic was next to nothing and we had a lot of fun zooming around Palmy.

But - we actually do need to head south, so time to hit the road!!

Only we could manage to find somewhere that’s not on the map!

We stumbled across Scotts Ferry whilst looking for a freedom camp next to the sea - a place so small and unknown that it’s not shown on the map. There’s a series of houses lining the one road, all with names that are puns of ā€˜Inn’ making it an ā€˜Inn Village’.

There was also a great big bull statue on the way into the town (it’s close to the town of Bulls) so we thought we’d strike a pose šŸ˜

Continuing our slow drift south, we stopped briefly in the small town of Hawera - mainly to climb their water tower!

This was completed in 1914 - built only to ensure that the local fire department had enough water pressure to fight regular fires that had plagued the town since the 1880’s.

You can pay a small contribution to its upkeep in return for the key to the door, and then climb 168 feet to its top for views across the town, as far afield as Mount Taranaki itself.

We headed into the town after for a coffee and some wandering, before hitting the road again.

We had a really rainy day as we left Mount Taranaki behind, so we headed for a scenic reserve not too far away.

No ordinary reserve - this one had Jurassic Park-esque fencing all the way around its perimeter, and even double gates in order to get in and out! Don’t be fooled though - this wasn’t to keep dinos in (shame! šŸ¦–) but to keep predators out.

And we’re not talking ā€˜big’ predators (NZ doesn’t actually have any) but animals like stoats, rats and mice. The fencing was therefore very close meshed, and had a top that was angled steeply and very slippery to stop smaller animals climbing over.

The result is a stunning wetland reserve, with many protected bird species living in safety. Once the rain had stopped, we went on a tramp around the whole reserve - and whilst Paul took multiple wildlife photographs, this little guy stood out as he practically followed us the entire time and was very tame, due to how protected the area is.

Brilliant place to spend some time in, regardless of weather.
