Well folks, I’m almost in a place to come back to my photography. I’ll be starting by getting back into my light painting first. A few workshops that were planned are now waiting for venue confirmation, info will follow soon. Neon Nightowl web site and blog will also be activated in nxt week or so after testing, maybe a page or group for event attendees too, so look out for updates. Cheers.

Kylo Ren. A bit more mobile of late, so took the opportunity to attended a cosplay shoot. I've not had a chance to edit them out yet but this was the first shot of the day and was done with no lights as they were still being set and I was thinking of trashing it, cause it was way under exposed. Thank goodness for raw!. Its a very quick edit to see how much I could recover and then added a few sparks and bits to the sabre. I wanted to keep the darkness of the original shot so didn't go overboard on the effects, that will come in the other shots once I go through them.

As I'm taking a step back from actually working in photography now, I'm finding that I can get a bit adventurous and experimental. Today I went out with a few photo buddies on a little photo walk and thought it was a good time to do some 'Free Lensing', shooting with the lens off the camera but held up to the sensor and moved back and forth or angled for focus and effects. Not something I've done much of. So, game for anything it was time to get out into the sun and whip the lens off the camera. I used a pair of old 50mm and 75-130mm Pentax lenses on the A6000. For a first attempt I was pleasantly surprised at the results. I wasn't taking notes on my shooting just enjoying trying to get focus. Its all practice, practice, practice. Yes my sensor will need a clean now.

Sparkle Orb. Another play from the back garden testing out my weighted wire spinner. Have purchased my 'Neon Nightowl' web address so will be sorting out hosting and a blog on my lightpainting soon.

Well I've been a bit out of sorts recently and a recurrence of a health issue really put the brakes on anything creative, so Facebook and posting updates was definitely not a priority. Thankfully I've been getting back into it slowly and just in time for the dark British nights, oh joy. This has though, given me a chance to dive back into my lightpainting photography again. News on a website and blog soon. I also had a few peeps asking about an introductory workshop so keep an eye out for that in the New Year. For now here is a few of my plays with some home-made light tools.

'A Drop Of The Hard Stuff' After way too long a time at the computer I've finally finished my edits from the Peaky Blinders shoot. All round it was a good experience and as I was experimenting with some styles of retouching, I would say that I've learned some things. Some techniques I'll probably never use again but its good to have them in your arsenal just incase.

This is another of the studio shots using just one feathered light to get rim light on the model with a high shutter speed to kill the surrounding ambient light. Something I wanted to do with the entire cast of models that day but time got the better of me unfortunately.

Today, in-between editing I have been making some homemade coloured filters for my little weird portrait project. Lots of colours being made up, their use will be dictated by not only mine but on the mood of the subject at the time.

This little image is titled 'Meditation' and is the latest from one of my practice sessions. Looking forward to doing this. If anyone would like to be one of my subjects and get a sparkling light portrait, drop me a message.

I'm still editing down the images from the Peaky Blinders themed shoot. The organisers and the models done a fantastic job and I really loved the old car. To keep with the decade of the theme I have been adding some tones and effects to some of the images to age them. Not something I do normally but in this instance I though I'd give it a go. Still had to do some in my favourite black and white though.

This past weekend I attended a 'Peaky Blinders' styled shoot in Leicester organised by Click Group Shoots. I don't attend many of these type of events as in the past I've been disappointed in the organisation and general chaos that ensues at such events. This can lead to a bad atmosphere sometimes and then that has a bearing on my photography.

Thankfully I had a great time at a well run shoot and the models and costumes were fantastic. We even had a few horses and a vintage car. Maybe I didn't get all my ideas or shots but it was still a very worthwhile day and I cannot recommend the guys at "click" enough.

I'm working on the images right now and trying out various editing techniques that I wouldn't normally use. It was a brilliant sunny day but I still found it hard to get the idea of really dark black and white images out my head. After all it seems appropriate for the time, so here is one of my faves from the day.

Old Habits Die Hard. A lowkey portrait of one of the participants, Geoff Amos.

In Session. . . . I'm still heavily leaning towards moody B/W and while the majority of my shots at the last shoot are suited to B/W, for this image I decided to stay with colour, I think it was the deep red velvet background. Lots of editing still to do.

A consequence of delving back into using film and old cameras again is the reigniting of my love of gritty black and white images, especially male portraiture which seems particularly suited to the style.

Although this image is a digital capture I've been experimenting with different methods to emulate film. "Bad Bailey", one light set up shot at my visit to Click Group shoots.

In A State Of Flux. Possible new personal project kicking off soon. Awaiting arrival of various parts and gizmos before it can really kick off. It will definitely be interesting and colourful.
