Welcome to this interactive exhibition 'Making an Honest Living' by me, Emma Griffin and talented artist, James Kail . Currently open and on display at the Greenhouse Gallery in the Guernsey Museum and Art Gallery until 14th June 2026.
People are at the very heart of this exhibition. I wanted to include growers and family members of past growers to help us celebrate the guernsey growing industry. Sharing memories and writing stories for all to read.
My great Uncle Michael Bourgaize was born in 1940, he grew and sold strawberries from an honesty box outside his parents house in Les Adams in St Peters, Guernsey. His dad used to sit on the porch and keep watch, making sure to keep people honest! Michael later went on to set up the much loved Strawberry Farm (late 60s - early 00's) with Rodney Brouard. It is sadly no longer in operation, but many people recall happy memories on the popular page, Guernsey Days Gone By. In his later years, Michael never stopped growing strawberries and continued doing what he loved until the end of his life. He recruited pickers from Europe and rented a greenhouse for many years in the Hougue du Pommier, Castel. Selling from an honesty box on the Vazon coast road. It was through exploring my family's connections to growing that inspired me to start this project just over two years ago.
I hope you enjoy the exhibition and I can't wait to hear your story!
