Finally managed to collect my jug. I made this before lockdown in a workshop ran by Muddy Fingers at The Laing Art Gallery. So fun to make and a great piece for our new flatšŸ˜. Go check out their page and work, they also sell home packages on their etsy store so anyone can get creative at home. Since lockdown is a time for everyone to try new things, I definitely recommend pottery!

Valentine’s day has came and gone. So I’m keeping the love alive by sharing one of my fashion/textile projects designed for the female of a very well-known criminal couple… Bonnie & Clyde.

(Fashion/Textile) For this project I had to research about Bonnie as she was only famously known for her criminal life style she shared with Clyde. The research assisted me to come up with a design and makes this neck scarf that characterises and reflects her life.

When Bonnie was a little girl, she wanted to be an actor. I looked at neck ties popular in the 1930’s; I also looked at actors on movie sets as these styles were seen on higher class women in the limelight. I came across a Photograph of Audrey Hepburn as Princess Ann in the film Roman Holiday wearing a neck scarf of this style.
The white polka dot/ love heart material. I’ve used this to express how her decisions were lead by the amount of love she had for her relationship/partner. Her choice of men (both had previous convictions) made her no stranger to the criminal lifestyle.
The left and right side of the scarf are two chains weighing her down. The design of the scarf shows the reality of a young girl, the material symbolises her relationship, the heavy chains symbolise her reality being pulled down this one-way criminal route, the lock padlocks represents the inevitable results of her decisions.
The front and back of the scarf consists of one chain on each side, both longer than the other two on the right and left. Both chains symbolise her reality being pulled down. The chains are stretched out either side being pulled taut, anchored down by one large battery on each side. This symbolises the car accident that caused her to have 3rd degree burns from her hip down too her ankle. The battery pulling the chain taut symbolises the struggle she had moving after the car accident, she had to be carried by Barrow (gang member) or hop.
I’ve rust dyed the material and rusted the chains. The chains themselves represent the criminal aspect of her life; the rusted chains convey the length of time the couple were on the run (2Year). When I rust dyed the material some of the metal also transferred onto it. It gave the material a sparkly purplish/blackish metallic effect that resembles the oil/petrol in the get away car they used for the robberies.

As some of you will know I designed the logo for The Marigolds. A brilliant commission that I've thoroughly enjoyed and recorded the process from start to finish. It's all done by hand, everything scaled and sized to perfection. Being a perfectionist means it will take a little longer.. But hard work pays off and we are thrilled with how it turned out!

Thank you to The Marigolds for giving me this opportunity, and showing off my work as you go.

Made with Winsor&Newton water colour paints, Prismacolor coloured pencils and UniPin fine liners.
(Process photos were took on my phone hence the bad quality, sketchbook & final piece were took on my camera.)

So here it is, from start to finish.
