I've been avoiding this post for quite a while. However its raining in the UK and its time I got round to this Algarve Gull identification conundrum.
I took these a few months back in Fábrica and Cabanas.
I know you experts will do very well but it just shows how confusing it can be when out on the saltpans on your own just clicking away.

This is a special post to all my loyal old and new followers.
I started my own FB site just for my own fun and to entertain my wonderful friends and family in the UK, Portugal, Canada and the Caribbean.
My goal has always been to photograph the unusual and interesting.....including our wildlife and the stunning scenery this world continues to offer us.
I also love to capture similar bird species so we can all learn to try and tell the differences.
Evidently many of my post have had over 5000 views. Not quite Taylor Swift standards but not too bad for an old man of 74yrs.

Our European Woodpeckers often are as illusive as the magical Kingfisher.
Unless you find a nesting site you are restricted to luck and your hearing.
Over the last year I was very lucky to find two Lesser Spotted in the scrubland behind my apartment in Tavira.
My goal this season is to try and get a decent shot of our even more illusive Iberian Green Woodpecker.
Hopefully you can join me on my quest when I return to my Algarve paradise in October.

The Algarve is one of Europe's great migration routes for many species of bird.
Imagine my shock to find a very rare Red-Necked Phalarope in full plumage not a mile from my house in Tavira two years ago in May.
These birds breed in Scandinavia and Russia and normally head in winter for the Indian Ocean and the Arabian.
The Algarve is amazing in springtime and I will be out there next year hoping for more rarities.

Whilst Portugal's Algarve has become one of the safest and most tranquil places to visit or live in the world. I never appreciated how much wildlife,flora and nature there was to see in my winter paradise.
Whilst many thousands of you know about the birdlife in the Ria Formosa there is so much more to see.

The incredible Hummingbird Hawk-Moth has in the UK taken centre stage in all nature and wildlife social media sites.
Hot airflows and strong southerly breezes from the Mediterranean have pushed these day-flying moths north in vast numbers.
Yesterday in Ickleford Hertfordshire, I had three on their favourite buffet of Salvia.

Identify Godwits has always been a nightmare for me. The very slight variances added to complete changes of plumage has resigned me often to hoping they just take off. In flight the tail and in this case the black under wings helped us confirm that the bird we were all watching for half an hour at distance was actually the extremely rare Hudsonian Godwit.
To prove my point I've added both of the other species plus a mystery one taken in 2022 at Mistley about a mile from the current rarity. Anyone care to confirm which one it was. Good Luck.
