After unwittingly hiring a guide in the middle of the Bornean jungle, I realised soon enough that he was really a city guide as he didn't have a clue how to identify, call or find the birds I was looking for. After much deliberation and a letter, I decided to head back to my B and B on my own and luckily enough, the owners of the B and B knew a highly experienced professional guide and hired him to help me. I knew I had done the right thing when he quietly ushered me over to show me this wonderful bird; The Rufous-collared Kingfisher. The jungle was dark and it was calling for quite a while with me in awe. I slept under the stars that night wondering what the next stages of my trip would bring in the deepest darkest jungles.

After 3 weeks in Costa Rica, I stumbled upon this beautiful young cougar. Luckily, he had just fed and was high up digesting itself in the jungle canopy. The guides had not seen a cougar for many years and had I not bought a local SIM card in the airport, I wouldn't have seen this amazing animal either.

The Banded Kingfisher in Thailand is an amazing bird. There are approx 99 different Kingfishers in the world. This one was particularly interesting as when it breathed in, its crest went up, and when it breathed out, its crest went down. It was perched over a footpath in perfect sunlight and wasn't phased by the people walking underneath it who didn't know it was there. The place was Khai Yai National Park approx 65km from Bangkok. My guide was Mr Nine, a guide who then lived and worked at Greenleaf B and B, Pak Chong.
