Really not much of a spider fan (house spiders ruined the species for me) but this nursery web spider caught my eye on my woodland rambles and I didn’t get the spider shudder (progress!)

Almost missed this beautiful moth as I fought through a particularly overgrown section of my transect - a first for me but I’m pretty sure it’s a large emerald (am hoping will correct me if I’m wrong!) Not a great photo but it was on a very narrow and ver overgrown path deep in the wood and I was juggling my glasses, notepad, camera, pen and luck!!

I counted more than 60 Heath fritillaries on my transect two weeks ago but this week, I saw less than ten! A short but glorious season in the sun? Still lots of cow wheat flowering in the woods and still some lovely specimens to be seen on the Radfall Route

Managed to capture a red admiral resting in the warm sunshine but the two white admirals I saw flitting about the upper branches of an oak tree remained tantalisingly elusive 😖

Lots of flashes of orange in the woods yesterday, with Gatekeepers on the wing.

I wasn’t sure if I’ve just been unlucky over the past few weeks in not seeing such a diversity of butterfly species along the woodland rides so it was reassuring to see lots of gatekeepers mingling with numerous ringlets and meadow browns as summer takes hold

Every other week (from April to September), I count butterflies in a transect in Thornden Woods for as part of the UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme and yesterday morning I was so happy to see my first heath fritillary of the year! Made my day. This is a rare and beautiful butterfly which has been flourishing in the thanks to careful conservation work.

I was particularly happy to capture this gorgeous creature on some flowering cow wheat, the larval food plant for this species.

PS am I the only one who can't help saying 'hello' out loud to each butterfly that flutters into view!! 🤦‍♀️🤣
