The Lion Ballroom, Leominster.
As hidden gems go, the Lion Ballroom is going to be at the top of my list. Superb architectural interior right in the heart of town, with excellent, friendly service... what a place!

It's a joy to photograph.

It's easy for me to overlook how much communication there is in an image. If I stop and think of it in terms 'words needed' then it can - and mostly does - change my mindset.

Could we show everything just because we can? Absolutely.
Should we show everything? Well,, that's up to us as a photographer and the message we want to convey.

I value the words I use, I don't want to waste them, and so an old quote creeps and guides me along the way.

"The rigorous exclusion of all that is superfluous."

Spending time with watches

Such beautiful details are revealed when studying a watch for photography. How best to bring these details out and showcase the watch with photography is a wonderful challenge.
Producing a finished image is very satisfying and. hopefully, creates a stand-alone attractive image as well as a compelling promtional photograph.
3 completely different lighting techniques used for these images, although they all fall under my preference for a strong presentation.

Things to do with Herring!

I wanted something more dynamic than just 'fish on a plate' with some chopped herbs etc. 'Behind the scenes' looked quite surreal as I set up outdoors so I could light a fire in a bucket beneath the hanging fish. I knew it had to be a rustic feel - something dark and natural. A weathered wooden fence as a backdrop - as well as providing some shelter for the smoke to travel straight up - and a clothes rail to hang the fish from. Single softbox lighting one side, and a fill card on the other to bounce some light back in.

Shot 2 was almost incidental as I had the fish on an old table as I made ready to tie the tails. A cast iron pan to separate subject from surface - and give a neat bit of framing - and a knife finished the shot. For some reason I feel this one has a Scandanavian look about it.

A challenging shoot for The Town House, Ludlow. Such an amazing interior with beautiful rooms and incredible features everywhere you look.
