There is no guideline, no authoritative voice; the only boundary is your imagination! And finally a reflection on a reflection of a reflection. Contemporary artist Rachael Bibby's piece Reflect was created during the exhibition and inspired by the theme of Ego. Rachael filmed herself at work creating a self portrait, holding up a mirror to the side of the canvas you never usually see. Her revealing and thought provoking work has now entered the RSA collections, joining the company it reflected.

It's the last day of Ego on Monday and the exhibition has been an interesting journey from its beginnings in April. We've seen some great visitor and invited interpretations and some fantastic responses from artists like John Byrne and George Donald. Rachael Bibby and Alan McGowan added to the show's Ego with their interesting artist in residence offerings, while school visits and portrait workshops have enhanced the mix. We're sorry it's coming to an end but look out for more interactive offerings from the RSA in the future. Because of its brilliance here's a reminder of John Byrne's 2 minute self portrait!

We had a group of pupils from Auchmuty High School visiting Ego the other week. They enjoyed the opportunity to respond to the works and here are the results! Their interpretation is now up in the exhibition for the rest of the exhibition run. (any names have been removed for the purposes of data protection)

Our thanks go to Alan McGowan for giving us and our visitors a rewarding insight into his self portrait work in the Ego exhibition yesterday. Although Alan found creating an introspective work in front of an audience a strange experience, the day was a great success! Surely the ego is affected by public scrutiny? The resulting work will join the other egos that inspired it for the remainder of the show. Be sure to come and see the exhibition before it closes on 1st October.

Our Ego has been in hiding for the last month but we're back with a bang and ramping it up for the last month of the exhibition. Keep an eye out for news of another exciting event very soon. Here's a splendidly frenetic self portrait by Richard Davies. Richard, I'm not sure I'd like to live in your head!

It would be Rembrandt's 407th Birthday today! What better way to celebrate the birthday of the master of the self portrait than with this? As George Donald RSA says "Whenever I see a self portrait...my mind turns to the Master"
