A moment for the dress…

Designed by London designer Cynthia Grafton-Holt, Maria wore this beautiful gown twice.

First, as she and Michael quietly eloped in Florence.

Then again, a few weeks later, as they celebrated with the people they love most in Glasgow.

I have always loved the idea that the most meaningful dresses become part of the story itself.

Not something worn once.

Something lived in.

Something that quietly carries memories from one beautiful day into another.

One of the quiet joys of photographing an artist’s wedding is seeing the care that goes into the people invited to help shape it.

Maria and Aoife have been friends for years, and there is something rather lovely about carrying flowers created by someone who knows you well.

The most memorable weddings often feel as though every element has been chosen because it belongs, not because it is expected.

Aoife’s work always seems to hold onto that feeling. Natural, painterly and full of movement, as though it has grown into the room rather than simply been arranged within it.

As much a part of this beautiful elopement story as anything else.

There are very few easier yeses than being asked to photograph one of the most meaningful celebrations in the life of a close friend — who also just happens to be a talented wedding industry artist herself.

Maria and Michael have become cherished friends in recent times, so being trusted to capture this for them meant a great deal.

A few weeks before this moment, they had quietly eloped in Florence.

Then, on a beautifully showery April Saturday in Glasgow, they gathered their closest friends and family at The Marlborough for what most guests believed was their wedding day.

Only a small handful of people knew the truth.

They had already said their official “I do”s.

The reveal came later, in a private room, as everyone watched the story unfold together on a large screen.

There were tears.
There was laughter.
There was the lovely feeling of everyone realising they had been let into something deeply personal.

And because Maria and Michael are both devoted foodies, the evening carried that wonderful Italian warmth throughout — generous food from their local favourite, , complemented by focaccia sannies by , beautiful details, live guest illustrations, and a room full of people who were genuinely delighted to be there.

It felt intimate.
Joyful.
Personal.
Completely them.

And it was an absolute honour to photograph.

So much more to come from this beautiful evening ❤️

Luxury is one of the most overused words in the wedding industry — and one of the most misunderstood.

True luxury, I think, is quieter than most people expect.

Beautiful flowers. Candlelight. Couture. Historic venues. Thoughtful details.

And yet…

Luxury is pace.

It’s having enough space in a wedding day to actually experience it while it’s happening. Enough room to breathe. Enough calm to stay connected to each other.

The most memorable weddings I’ve witnessed have been deeply layered and beautifully designed — but the atmosphere still felt spacious. Unrushed. There was room for stillness, for emotion, for people to actually be present inside everything that had been so thoughtfully created around them.

That feeling changes everything. Not just the experience of the day, but the photographs too.

Because beautiful imagery rarely comes from pressure. It comes from presence.

This philosophy shapes the way I work behind the scenes as well. I protect space in my diary and show up to every wedding calm, observant and fully invested — because I feel my couples deserve the best version of me.

To me, that is luxury. Not excess. Not performance.

Space.
Presence.
Rhythm.
Care.

And a day that feels like your life, not somebody else’s template.

Maybe it’s the mornings spent with ten minutes of Downton Abbey and a green tea. The hours wandering quietly through heritage estate venues on wedding days and during private visits or being curled up with a book and the fire going on rainy afternoons. The walled garden wandering, Jane Austen novels, Charlotte Brontë atmospheres, or the slow romantic films I grew up with.

Maybe it’s the Nancy Meyers moments, the real family laughter around dinner tables, the countryside home we’ve lovingly renovated, or the golden spaniel paws clicking on the floor beside me each day.

But something about this work has always lit me up from the inside out.

Not only because weddings are beautiful, but because of the real human stories within them — the connection, the history woven through old spaces, the tiny moments that might otherwise go unnoticed.

The small smile as a gown receives its final touches.
The lift of a veil during the quiet opening moments of a ceremony.
A soft pause as a couple wander gently through the gardens of a historic private estate together.

And perhaps it’s Scotland and Europe themselves too.

The warmth.
The history.
The welcome.
The vast landscapes, rolling hills and endless greenery.

All of it quietly fuels the observant nature of my work and the way I’m drawn to the smallest moments — the ones that truly feel quite magical.

This beautiful Chatsworth tablecloth design from couldn’t have been a more perfect fit for the soft blue tones of the Penicuik House dining room.

As one of Scotland’s newest and most exclusive private estate wedding venues, the house carries an unmistakable historic charm, while the atmosphere within feels inviting and light.

There’s a softness to the way the spaces have been restored and designed — a balance of heritage, warmth and modernity that allows the house to feel both expansive and deeply welcoming at once.

This is how a wedding can feel within its walls and grounds.

Immersive.
Layered.
Atmospheric.
Personal.

A fitting setting and perfect complement to the detailed, artful design brought together by such a talented team for the opening chapter of INSPIRED — a creative exploration of atmosphere, storytelling and modern weddings within Scotland’s most exceptional heritage spaces.

The weddings that feel most immersive are rarely the ones built around trends and timelines.

They’re the ones where couples have space to feel them.

To breathe.
To linger.
To stay present with one another.

And often, the couples who trust most deeply aren’t looking for constant direction throughout the day.

They’re focused on something quieter.

The atmosphere.
The emotional pacing.
Whether the day feels calm to move through.
The space for real moments to exist within it.

The elements I’ve always been most drawn to are the ones that linger longest in memory.

Peaceful moments.
Long dinners.
Spacious timelines.
Guests lingering by candlelight.
Weekends that feel immersive and deeply personal.

Beauty, meaning and emotional texture existing together.

And strangely enough, those are often the weddings that become the most timeless visually too.

Because trends shift quickly.

But human feeling rarely does.

One of the things I understand most deeply about weddings didn’t come from photographing them.

It came from my own.

It was beautiful in so many ways and filled with so much love, but looking back now, one thing I wish we’d invested in differently was support.

Not because anything went “wrong.”

But because I didn’t fully realise at the time how much emotional space a wedding day actually requires in order to truly experience it while it’s happening.

There are moments I remember vividly.

And there are other parts that passed in a blur simply because I was thinking about too many things at once.

Timings.
People.
Logistics.
Whether everything was flowing properly.

It’s one of the reasons I care so deeply now about creating calmness and breathing room for my couples within a wedding day.

The quiet in-between moments.

A slow walk together after the ceremony.
A few minutes alone before entering dinner.
The feeling that somebody else is holding the structure of the day so they don’t have to.

Beautiful weddings are never just about aesthetics.

They’re about how the day felt to live through.

And honestly, I think that feeling stays with people far longer than almost anything else.

A beautiful wedding doesn’t automatically translate into a beautiful experience.

Early in my career, I often wondered if becoming a better photographer meant learning to pose people more specifically.

Direct more.
Refine more.
Carefully curate more.

Despite this, I chose to trust my natural instinct deeply and found that the images that truly resonated were rarely the more orchestrated ones.

They were the moments in between.

The exhale just after the ceremony.
A fleeting look across the dinner table.
The instinctive reach for someone’s hand without even thinking.

The moments where there was enough space to actually feel the day while it was unfolding.

That’s why the human side of a wedding matters so deeply.

It’s the feeling created by the people guiding it quietly behind the scenes that ultimately shapes it.

The planners creating calm structure.
The friends who ground you emotionally.
The small pauses that allow everything to sink in.

My role within that has always been less about directing moments and more about noticing them.

Looking for the light.
Allowing space.
Paying attention.

Because the more emotionally safe and present people feel, the less they perform in front of a camera.

And that’s usually where the truest, most timeless photographs begin.
