Mike Harvey Photography

Mike Harvey Photography I am a keen amateur photographer and wildlife enthusiast from Gloucestershire, England.

Most of my photos never make it any further than the hard drive of my computer. This is my attempt to change that and showcase some of the UK's amazing wildlife.

Skomer Mammals

The most common mammals on Skomer are Rabbits. These were introduced to the island in the 13th century, originally to be farmed as a food source. However, at one stage they were also used to provide material for the fur trade. This has resulted in some interesting colour variations developing.

Grey seals are also commonly seen in the waters around Skomer and Skomer is an important pupping site for Grey seals. Though this usually peaks in late August, so it was unusual to see one during my visit in June.

Short-eared Owl.

Whilst Skomer is famous for its Puffin population, its also home to a wild variety of other wildlife. This includes a small resident population of Short-eared owls which I managed to see on a few occasions during my recent stay. I even got to see one of the UK’s rarest mammals, a Skomer vole. These are only found on Skomer. Unfortunately, it ended up as owl food, but …

Puffins..

I am slowly working my way through all the photos I took during my stay on Skomer. A long way to go, but here are a few of my favourite Puffin shots so far.

Apologies

Sorry I have not been posting much recently. Firstly, I had some computer issues, and then, I have been away on a trip.

I have just got back from 3 days on Skomer. For those not familiar with Skomer, it’s a small island off the coast of Pembrokeshire in Wales. It’s famous for its sea birds, especially Puffins, with 52019 counted this year (and yes, they do count each bird, not just extrapolate from a small sample area).

Getting a booking to stay is like trying to get tickets for Glastonbury!

I have thousands of images to sort through, so stay tuned! Lots more inbound!

June

This month’s picture from the family calendar has been slightly delayed due to some computer issues! But better late than never!

Its a Gannet from RSPB Bempton Cliffs taken last year, and my attempt to shoot something a little different, so probably a Marmite shot! Sadly, this year’s planned visit did not work out (yet?)

Yesterday was International Otter Day! As they are one of my favourite mammals. I can’t believe I forgot! But my excuse is that I was in a hide cut off from comms photographing Little owls.

Better late than never, so here is a shot from my last trip to Mull.

Cuckoo’s
Cuckoo’s approach to rearing their young may not make them the most loved of birds, but I am always pleased to hear their distinctive call. Something which is unfortunately much rarer than it used to be. So, it was great to hear when I was out yesterday.

Unfortunately, I did not get a sighting. But perseverance is a requirement in the world of wildlife watching!

These shots are from a more successful encounter last year.

Kestrels

Whilst the main reason for my trip to Somerset was to see the foxes, the hide I was using was actually set up for Kestrels and the fox cubs are really just a seasonal bonus.

So, as it would be rude to ignore the real residents .. I was lucky to have visits from both the Male (identified by his grey head) and Female.

More Foxes

A few more shots from my trip to Somerset. A couple of cub shots I missed posting, but today’s main theme are the two vixens responsible for the two separate litters.
