Yesterday morning, I woke up, saw the beautiful autumn weather and decided to book a last minute trip to Aviemore. Sometimes, you just have to make the most of the moment.

This morning, I was out with my camera at Loch an Eilein in the Cairngorms National Park, enjoying the autumn colours and the beautiful early morning light. 🌄

How beautifully our cameras can capture the aurora. But I also want to point out that this is roughly what it looks like to the naked eye. Our eyes struggle to distinguish colours in low light, which is why the Northern Lights can appear much fainter and more greyish than they do in photographs. A camera can gather light over several seconds, revealing colours and details that are difficult to see otherwise.

Still, it’s absolutely amazing to witness in person. When the aurora is particularly strong, you can see the green pillars dancing and moving across the sky with your own eyes. The stronger and brighter the display, the more vivid the colours tend to appear, although how much colour we see can vary from person to person. But no photograph can quite capture the feeling of standing beneath a sky that seems to be alive.

A beautiful hidden gem tucked away in the Highlands. This lovely little waterfall plunges 60 feet (18 metres) through a rugged, rocky gorge. Small but mighty, it’s a lovely reminder that some of the most beautiful places are often found off the beaten track.
