📷 The Weekly Focus #4
Simple tips. Better images. Every week.

👇 This week: The Exposure Triangle – Bringing it all together

ISO, aperture and shutter speed all work together to control how bright your image is.

The simple truth:
• ISO controls how sensitive your camera is to light
• Aperture controls how much is in focus
• Shutter speed controls how movement appears

Why it matters:
If you change one setting, it affects the others.

For example:
• Lower ISO = cleaner image, but needs more light
• Wider aperture = more light and blurrier background
• Faster shutter speed = sharper action, but less light

👉 Golden Rule: Change one setting, then think about what else needs adjusting.

📸 Mini challenge:
Take one photo in manual mode and change just one setting at a time.

Try:
• ISO 100 to ISO 800
• f/4 to f/11
• 1/1000 sec to 1/125 sec

Compare what changes in brightness, sharpness and movement.

📷 The Weekly Focus
Simple tips. Better images. Every week.

👇 This week: Shutter Speed – Freeze it or blur it?

Shutter speed controls how long your camera sees movement.

The simple truth:
• Fast shutter speed = freezes action
• Slow shutter speed = captures motion blur

When to use it:
Use a fast shutter speed for wildlife, sports, pets and moving people.
Use a slow shutter speed for waterfalls, light trails and creative movement.

👉 Golden Rule: Fast shutter = sharp action. Slow shutter = movement and blur.

📸 Mini challenge:
Photograph something moving using:
• 1/1000 sec
• 1/125 sec
• 1 second

Compare how movement changes in each image.

Camera Lucida — Seeing Differently
One-Day Photography Workshops at Loch Insch Fishery

Join Rui Costa and Philip Meadows for a one-day photography workshop designed to help you express yourself through photography.

Set in the inspiring surroundings of Loch Insch Fishery, Camera Lucida offers a creative, hands-on day for anyone who wants to move beyond simply taking pictures and begin making images with meaning, mood and personal intention.

The workshop is split into two sessions. In the morning, you’ll explore technical camera controls, artistic composition techniques and conceptual photography. In the afternoon, the focus turns to storytelling, where you’ll use the ideas from the morning session to create a maximum of six images that work together as a visual story.

With a maximum of just six attendees, the day offers plenty of individual guidance. The group will be split into two, with three attendees spending time with Rui and three with Phil before swapping over, giving everyone the benefit of both tutors’ experience and creative approach.

Workshop dates:
Sunday 14th June and Sunday 28th June
Time: 09:00–17:00
Price: Just £95.00 per person
Location: Loch Insch Fishery

📷 The Weekly Focus
Simple tips. Better images. Every week.

👇 This week: Aperture – Why your background goes blurry

Aperture controls how much of your image is in focus.

The simple truth:
• Low f-number (f/1.8 – f/4) = blurry background
• High f-number (f/8 – f/16) = more of the scene in focus

When to use it:
Use a low f-number for portraits (to blur the background)
Use a high f-number for landscapes (to keep everything sharp)

👉 Golden Rule: Lower f-number = more blur. Higher f-number = more in focus.

📸 Mini challenge:
Take the same photo at f/2.8, f/8, and f/16 — keep your subject the same and compare the background.
