Never tire of reading about migrating birds and the fantastic journeys that they undertake 😊

It may seem like mid-summer☀️to us, but for our Cuckoos it’s well and truly autumn! 🍂

All of our satellite tagged Cuckoos have now departed and are on their way to the vast forests of Central Africa's Congo Basin, where they will spend the winter months.

Two of the tagged Cuckoos, Ashok and Beech, have already made epic flights across the Sahara, while Arthur has reached Morocco. Others are making their way steadily south through Europe, heading towards the Mediterranean.

Our most northerly bird, perhaps appropriately, is Bean (named after actor and Get Birding Podcast host Sean Bean) who remains in north-eastern Germany.

Headstarting is a promising conservation tool for Curlew recovery, and involves collecting eggs from nests at risk of destruction, rearing the hatched chicks in captivity and releasing them into the wild.

BTO staff then monitor the birds, using methods like GPS tracking, to see whether they return to breed in the area where they were released.

There is more to learn about how many birds return to breed, how they locate other Curlew, and their behaviour and survival post-release.
