It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of Frazer Ashford, a treasured husband, father, brother and grandfather, and an unwavering friend and inspiration to so many of you.

Frazer died peacefully last Wednesday evening at Guy’s Hospital in London, surrounded by his loved ones. He was 71.

Frazer was a celebrated showbiz photographer and award-winning film and television producer who blessed us with an irrepressible spirit of fun and adventure.

His photo archive speaks for itself – he shot the likes of Charlie Chaplin, Elton John, David Bowie, Judi Dench and David Jason to name but a few, in a career spanning five decades.

On the TV side of things Frazer worked with an array of stars, from Adam Faith and Willie Rushton to Timothy Spall and Charlton Heston.

He brought us such gems as Great Little Trains, Shady Tales and the groundbreaking 1995 docu-series The Serial Killers, which saw Frazer and his brother Neal visiting Death Row to interview many of America’s most deranged murderers face to face.

Closer to home, Frazer launched one of the UK’s first cable news channels in his native Croydon where he continued to work as in-house photographer at the Fairfield Halls until his retirement.

While Frazer had been unwell for some time, he still managed to celebrate his 50th wedding anniversary in May and enjoy time in his home from home, Curracloe in southeast Ireland.

He didn’t fancy a funeral - he wanted a good old knees-up for his family and friends. We’ll announce details of a memorial party when everything is planned.

Above all, Frazer was a true original who broke all the rules. Eccentric doesn’t remotely do him justice. We will miss him profoundly but will remember his fantastic stories and jokes with pride and laughter.

If you have a moment please click the link below to enjoy Frazer’s timeless photo archive at ArenaPAL. Even better if you can do so over a glass of his favourite tipple, a Bacardi and Coke.

Arthur Davison was born in Canada and became a conductor and violinist who worked to instil a love of music in children. Amongst the many concert series which he founded were the Arthur Davision Family Concert in 1966 and then until 1990 he was the director and conductor of the National Youth Orchestra of Wales. He died in South London in 1992.

Way back I was commissioned to photograph an unknown band (at the time) - The New Seekers. As it meant a trip to Gravesend I was not keen but in order to sweeten the deal I got full access to Gene Pitney at the Victoria Palace. The year was 1972 and here is one of my pix.

Those were the days. Simply walk up to the stage and shake your favourite artist's hand. This image of Neil Sedaka in 1974 shows exactly what I am talking about. No need for security. Perhaps you did this, maybe this is you? As I said, those were the days.

A picture from my files which I did not take. It is important as it was taken of me in Houston, Texas, in 1979 during the opening of my first American one-man photo exhibition at the Houston Fine Arts and Collector's Gallery. This image is dedicated to my friends in Texas, Brian whom I met at the gallery and his wife Donna.
