I left London in the summer, after the landlady sold the house suddenly, that I was sharing with other housemates. I had been living there three years.

I put my stuff in storage and I packed as much as I could into a suitcase and departed. I decided to take the leap and try and work remotely whilst giving more intensive focus on my PhD and art practice. I hoped that leaving London for as long as possible, I would get a better balance in life and also live for cheaper. The last few months have made me realise just how important my research feels and why it matters to keep going by following this unknown path. Taking the leap when mostly the future is unknown. I have been inspired by three incredibly strong Irish women in my life, my mother, my grandmother and aunt who I never met but hold her letter with me. Their defiant spirits are with me everyday.

I have made so many friends along the way, many unexpectedly on buses and in villages I’ve been staying. All have helped me along the way in some way. The kindness of strangers has been incredibly special.

All this the said, there are no words to articulate the horrors that are happening in the world at the moment. I may be away from my ‘everyday’ and I post highlights of this new path I am following step by step, but my eyes, heart and soul are very much following and praying at the same time.

Reading aloud Edna O’Brien’s ‘A Pagan Place’ through the lens of the shopping list scene in Chantel Akerman’s ‘My Mother Laughs.’

Mushrooms as our guide.

Reading and listening groups and ‘performances’ are guided by the atmospheres we find ourselves.

This morning, in Warsaw, I read into the crisp and cool forest air as we followed paths guided by our search for mushrooms. Edible mushrooms joined us, as we left the others behind on the forest floor. The words tangled with the sounds of a woodpecker, raindrops and distant voices in the forest.

Later, we will share a homemade soup of forest mushrooms, moments from kitchen tables shared by Akerman and Natalia and the protagonist and her mother in ‘A Pagan Place’ will hoover over our table. Yet-to-arrive.

Reading Edna O’Brien, ‘A Pagan Place’ through the act of the shopping list in Chantel Akerman’s, ‘My Mother Laughs’. Paper in progress in Poland. Images of the two books that have travelled with me. I left ‘My Mother Laughs’ in the convent in Venice last year (due to Ryanair baggage restrictions) and it was there when I returned in July this year. It then travelled with me through Venice, Rome, France, Ireland, Greece and Bulgaria, Poland and ‘A Pagan Place’ joined in Poland. The tracings of the conversation felt before it began here in Poland. I am excited to visit Akerman’s exhibition in November, in Paris My upcoming reading groups are thought through the shopping list scene.

Shared Air Artist Residency

The durational collective practice of my practice and research is essential for navigating bodily, psychic, relational and political ‘histories that hurt’. Embodied Circular Readings occur in places we dwell together over time, which hold reading and listening groups, that I facilitate, meals where we cook and share food together and the in-between sociability of these atmospheres.

The shared rhythm of dwelling together.

I will be sharing posts of the durational time I spent with these incredible people.

I will keep sharing fragments of our shared moments.

Embodied Circular Reading moving through the air

My letter to Tsarino.

We begin in our communal outdoor kitchen,
the plates returned cleaned and dried to the wooden shelves,
the vessels that held the Irish stew I cooked.

We find ourselves surrounded by cows,
that roam the Eastern Rhodope mountains,
we dance gently past their curious eyes.

We move together through the abandoned village,
inside,
outside houses,
climbing down towards the waterfall,
passing pine and oak trees,
our voices cling to the leaves.

Our bodies feel the cold welcome of water held in the stream,
a large beetle dives, down to the depths, back to the air
the water weaves, flows, trickles on its way to the waterfall.

We climb,
we share two cars,
we find ourselves at the vitrine,
which holds fragments of our words
from the reading and listening group that came before.

The sun is setting.
Our communal fire crackles into the night air,
mingling with distant Bulgarian music, and the chatty crickets.
The timbre of my voice joins the chorus.
Our communal voices tangle.

Our bodies respond to filmic breath between the firelight and our head touches.
My body disorientates, orientates, reorientates between the filmic body and my body.

Disorientation at the Site of the Letter,
Goldsmiths University of London
May 2024

The timbre of my voice and breath vibrates between bodies in our collective shared air to create temporal spaces of time out of kilter, to attend to ‘histories that hurt’ and move to the gift of future breath.

We breathe with the autobiographical, poetical, archival, polyphony of voices from previous readings, my ‘performances’ in ‘public’ and ‘private’ air and filmic bodies.

‘Poetics of Breathing’

Breathing with textual and bodily breath.
The listening and reading groups, I facilitated in Tsarino, as part of my artist residency, culminated in a communal exhibition at the Razklon Gallery. Collaborators who arrived from the local community and visiting international volunteers and artists hand wrote fragments that spoke to the resonates of these listening and readings groups, and they were suspended in the air in Tsarino.

The glass piece that is suspended in the air was made by the incredible

We installed the work on Thursday and held a private view for the community A big thank you to Terry and the community for all the support in helping with my projects.

The reading and listening groups are part of my durational practice which deals with suspended breath, how we share air, and the gift of future breath. It seeks reorientations of the Irish Catholic maternal, in the mother and daughter relation and asks how we can collectively attend without judgement to the triggering of shame in the bodily, psychic, relational and political.

This evening I will offer a ‘performance’ as part of an embodied workshop, I am facilitating- an embodied circular reading Before each embodied workshop I send a letter of address which shares the affective terrains we will traverse. A letter to each collaborator who will arrive at the workshop space. An invitation to come and go as needed. At Tsarino we have written these letters as a communal practice. Translating them in each language that speaks into the air here, Bulgarian, Greek, Dutch and English. These are the letters waiting on our shared dinner table. This is our durational practice that carries communities along with ‘histories that hurt’ Sara Ahmed.
