Need ideas to keep older kids engaged during a family photoshoot?

Here are 3 games I use all the time to create natural laughter, movement and genuine interactions (and yes, they work brilliantly with younger kids too!).

No awkward posing.
Just play.

Which one would your family enjoy most? 👇

Game 1: Blanket Run 🏃‍♀️

Mum and Dad hold a blanket (or a bedsheet) between them.

The kids run underneath while the parents try to “catch” them by dropping the blanket.

Simple? Yes.
Hilarious? Also yes.

The running, anticipation and laughter create the most natural smiles—and loads of opportunities for great action shots.

Game 2: Zombie Walk 🧟

Mum stands in the middle holding a flower (or any prop).

Everyone else walks around her while she tries to “catch” them.

The catch?
Everyone has to move in a different silly way.

Zombie walk.
Ballerina walk.
Penguin walk.
Ninja walk.
Hop like a bunny…

It gets sillier every round—and that’s exactly when the best expressions happen.

Game 3: Shadow Theatre 🎭

Mum and Dad hold a white bedsheet nice and tight to create a frame.

The sun should be behind the sheet, so the light shines through it and creates beautiful silhouettes.

Then everyone takes turns stepping behind the sheet to dance, jump, hug, make funny poses or simply be silly together. (Yes, Mum and Dad can join in too!)

It’s such a simple setup, but the results look completely different from your typical family photos—and kids absolutely love seeing their giant shadows come to life.

When it’s 30°C, I’m not asking your kids to stand still (well, I wouldn’t do it anyway…)

I’m telling them to get soaked!

They think they’ve just had the best day ever, and you get photos of pure joy that actually shows their real personalities.

Bonus? Core memories created.

In my very personal opinion, there’s no better way to do a family photoshoot during a heatwave than playing with water and eating ice lollies. 🤘⚡️

Third time photographing this family, and at this point it genuinely feels like visiting friends.

They welcomed their second baby and invited me over on the day their older son turned three (what a ball it was!) Grandparents in tow, presents, balloons and the full beautiful chaos that comes with all of that + newborn, of course.

Newborn shoots with me, when there’s a toddler on board, usually go something like this: the toddler runs the show first, because if he feels like the fuss is about him, he’s in. We lean into that, let him be the star, and then when he starts to run out of steam we take a snack break, get some quiet time with just mum, dad and the baby, and pull him back in before he’s had too long to think about it. No forcing, no bribing (well, maybe a snack), just reading the room and fun activities.

If you’re expecting a baby and want a newborn shoot that works around your real life, chaotic toddler and visiting grandparents included, send me a message. 📸

And a few things I care about a lot more:

Connection.
Personality.
Play.
Storytelling.
How a family feels together.
Photos that actually look like the people in them.

My photography always was about people, but I learned the more I focus on THEM instead of creating perfect pictures the better the results are.

Your photoshoot should look like you - not the current trends, not Pinterest.

If your happy place is an old music venue with rock music playing in the background, let’s go there.

If you want to twirl around in a tutu, let’s do that too.

And if you’re somewhere in between—part rock star, part ballerina—then we’ll make space for both.

I don’t believe in squeezing people into a version of motherhood that doesn’t feel like them. The best photos happen when you bring your personality, your story, your quirks, and the things you genuinely love.

Is this type of maternity shoot for everyone? Probably not.

But if you’re looking for something that feels more like you and less like a copy-and-paste Pinterest board, I’m your girl.

P.S. The outfits from these photos are from my client wardrobe and you’re more than welcome to borrow them for your own session 🤍

Someone told me that a good photographer can take a good photo using a toaster. I used to think what makes me a pro was latest cameras, variety of lenses, add ons, filters, and of course - harness and using at least two cameras simultaneously.

That was when I started 5 years ago, my perspective shifted with time and experience and after testing lots of options I got to a point where I have my perfect setup.

Less is more? Or more doesn’t hurt? What do you think?

You build a home, pour your heart into making it the safest place on earth. You carefully choose neighbourhood, find a flat with breathtaking views, discover the best corner coffee shop and quiet park to chill on Friday afternoons.

Then you have kids and suddenly you experience it all over again. Living room becomes playroom, the view from the window is all about planes now, Friday afternoons are spent in your local playground.

But it’s still your happy place.

Sometimes life takes you somewhere new, but you can’t pack up your place into moving boxes, all you can take is your memories.

Matylda invited me over to spend a morning with their family and photograph the places that matters the most to them. So they could bring all happy memories to their new home, they’ll start building outside of London.

There are lots of milestones in family life that deserve to be remembered with photos, moving to a new home is definitely one of them.
