The Cygnus Wall is one of the most active and visually striking ionization fronts within the North America Nebula (Caldwell 20).

What a joy to image such a deep space emission nebula from my back garden observatory in Wiltshire UK. The journey started on 5th August, 2025 and was captured over an 8-month period involving 5 different nights with the last capture on 30th April, 2026. A total of 1,431 images were taken, which was stacked in SIRIL and edited in PS. I also used Low and High frequency processing in PS to enhance the image and bring out the detail and dark dust clouds.

A total 16 hrs and 50 minutes of integration, a combination of 30 sec, 60 sec, 120 sec and 300 sec images plus darks with the Svbony IMX585 non cooled camera.

April has been a fantastic month for astrophotography, since the 1st April with two rigs running every night when there is a possibility of a clear spell – Just in April, I have managed 159 hours of data capture involving 105 target sessions including adding many new galaxies never imaged before. Every new target captured makes the next one more difficult with my limited back garden views!

My first Deep Space Astrophotography journal (quarterly) update for 2026.

We are well into Astronomical Spring which began on 20th March marking the vernal equinox in the Northern Hemisphere. If you are interested why this is different to Meteorological Spring which started on 1st March, Astronomical Spring is when the sun passes over the celestial equator leading to roughly equal day and night lenght.

It's hard to believe we are in the 4th month of 2026! I've had to take every minute of clear sky time with such poor weather early in the year. However, I'm so surprised what I have been able to capture between the clouds rolling in and out night after night.

To image 109 sessions of deep space targets in the first 13 weeks with a total of 168 hours of data capture is more than I thought I had captured until I updated my journal this morning.

I have captured so much data, I'm well behind with my processing and still have data captured in 2025 that hasn't been processed. I'm sure there will be a rainy day soon to make a start!

Lapwing in flight with lake reflection.

If you have tried to capture birds in flights, have a go at Lapwings they are so fast and you just don't know what direction they are going to turn next!

As photographers we need to be pushing ourselves to try different techniques to capture fast moving targets like birds in flight.

Always go with a plan of what image you are looking to capture, you are more likely to succeed.

Post processing is so important but we must get all necessary settings correct in camera. I have also shared my straight out of camera RAW image to show what can be achieved.

I’ve been taking Astro images for over 15 years but I only started Deep Space imaging since January 2025.

I’ve kept a journal throughout 2025 and considering the poor weather in the UK I’m amazed how many imaging sessions I completed.

I've managed to capture different Nebula’s, Galaxies, Star Clusters, Planets and one comet in 2025.

Melotte 15 Star Cluster and the Heart Nebula.

At the centre of IC 1805 the Heart Nebula, is the open Star Cluster Melotte 15 (also known as Collinder 26).

This image centres on Melotte 15, contains some of the most massive stars in IC 1805, driving ionization fronts and stellar winds throughout the nebula.

Total data of 8 hours over two nights in August, 2025.

Two hours getting to know a Cosmic Heart in Deep Space!

IC 1805 is famously called the Heart Nebula because of its glowing, heart-shaped appearance - nature’s reminder that even the universe has a softer side.

Located about 7,500 light-years away in the constellation Cassiopeia, the photons of light that hits my camera sensor today began its journey long before human civilization!

At its core lies the Melotte 15 star cluster, filled with young, massive stars whose intense radiation sculpts the nebula’s glowing clouds.

The nebula shines primarily in ionized hydrogen, producing the deep red colour often captured in astrophotography - symbolizing energy, life, and creation.

A mosaic image totalling 726 images, stacked and edited in SIRIL and Photoshop.

Pacman Nebulae NGC 281 taken on 1st August, 2025 – I thought it’s time to start posting a few more images captured over the summer period of 2025.

It’s a bright emission nebula in the northern constellation of Cassiopeia and it’s over 9,000 light years from earth! Discovered by Edward Emerson Barnard in1883 it’s an active star forming region, home to the open star cluster IC 1590 whose hot massive stars ionize the surrounding hydrogen gas, causing it to glow.

Total data is 1 hour and 40 minutes (30s exposures) with 20 darks taken in one evening.

Comet C/2025 A6 (Lemmon) – the icy body of the comet has been preserved in deep cold storage, far from the Sun, since the Solar System’s earliest days.
It’s likely that the comet formed over 4.5 billion years ago!

The comet’s origin is vastly older than Stonehenge.

Single image capture on 29.10.2025 with a Pentax K1 and Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 lens. Settings - ISO 1600, f/2.8 and 6 secs. The K1 is a beast of a camera with a Sony 36MP sensor that was first released in 2016!

It's incredible that Pentax are still supporting the camera with firmware updates.

I’ve pushed the 500 rule a bit too far and the stars are just starting to trail but only visible when at 100% zoom!

Astrophotography Journal No. 01 – My Photography Journey into Deep Space

I’ve completed my first journal and it’s available on my website; I’ve kept the journal reasonably short being the first one! I have a considerable amount of content to share if there is an interest in the subject matter.

The journal is free to read from my blog page at Clive Greenland Photography Limited - the link to the journal is below for easy access.

https://clivegreenland.photography/astrophotography-journal-01

All I ask is that you like my post and follow me on my business page or Instagram page if you would like to receive notification when the next journal is available. I’ve included an overview of the content for journal No. 2!

Please let me know if you spot any typos – I don’t have a team of designers, writers, or editors to call upon, it’s just me!
