Large White Butterfly nectaring on Knapweed recently

*************************************************************

I was saddened to hear of the death of country music legend, Dolly Parton, yesterday. I grew up with her music as my late father was a country music fan, so when I was a child, we often listened to her tape in the car. Being a butterfly-lover, "Love is like a butterfly," was a favourite song of mine, together with "Coat of Many Colours", "Applejack", and of course, "Jolene " to name a few πŸ’ž

I was looking through photos I'd downloaded to my phone and found this one of a tiny froglet perched on my fingertips that I'd never shared. Back in 2022, we raised tadpoles from frogspawn in our pond. We returned most of the tadpoles and kept just a handful back to watch their development into froglets. Sadly, I've not seen any frogs in the garden for quite some time, which is very sad as we used to have lots. We are just redoing our pond from scratch, as unfortunately, the liner developed a leak, but hopefully, in time, the wildlife will return. In fact, today, we spotted a water boatman, which just goes to show that "if you build it, they will come."

I've been taking photos since I got my first camera - a Kodak instamatic at around age 7. In the 40+ years πŸ˜… since then, I've had about 10 other cameras, mostly Canon, and being a hoarder, I still have them all! 😁 I especially love the natural world and can spend hours happily snapping away, trying to get that ever elusive perfect shot. Here's a selection I've taken this year that I've not yet shared. Hope you enjoy them as much as I loved photographing them. Happy πŸ“·πŸ˜Š

I couldn't go to Dartmoor without seeing some ponies, so on the final day of the holiday, we went to Haytor Rock to hopefully find some. This is a funny looking pony I know πŸ˜‚ (they'll follow another time), but while there, it was lovely to see this juvenile wheatear, who let me get quite close 😊

Had a lovely week away in Devon last week. Spotted Painted Ladies and a Hummingbird Hawk-Moth on the Verbena at the Sidmouth Donkey Sanctuary. I always fit in a visiit there whenever I am down that way (which sadly isn't as often as I'd like!)

We went for a long walk today along the river at Finglebridge. Found a spot where lots of pond skaters had gathered alongside a big rock. I love the patterns the light makes where their feet touch the surface

A few weeks ago I was thrilled to find my first Marbled White butterfly in my local area. Before, I had only seen one a couple of times while on holiday on the south coast of England. I only got a couple of record shots but I managed to go out that same evening and I saw it again and saw where it landed to roost - of course, it had to be way down and deep in the undergrowth, so I still didn't get a brilliant shot. Nevertheless, I was so pleased to finally find one here. I love the markings on their underwing 🀍
