Ha Long Bay
The breathtaking natural wonder of North Vietnam. This extraordinary archipelago of nearly 2000 limestone karsts is genuinely awe inspiring. Its been the cradle of civilisation There is archeological evidence that points to fishing settlements that go back 18,000 years. After that it became a natural stronghold, a strategic naval base to repel invaders. Its threaded through the cultural memory of Vietnam in the poetry, songs and even in the royal records of ancient dynasties. So when you sail through these islands, you’re not just sailing through this beautiful awe inspiring landscape, you’re sailing through a place of myths and legend.
According to Vietnamese legend, Ha Long Bay was formed when the Jade Emperor sent a Mother Dragon and her children to help the Vietnamese fight northern invaders. The dragons spat out jewels and jade, which turned into the thousands of limestone islands and islets, forming a defensive barrier that destroyed enemy ships. After the victory, the Mother Dragon descended in this spot, known as “Ha Long” (Descending Dragon), while her children stayed at “Bai Tu Long”.
Arthur and I spent three days absorbing this incredible wonder of our world. We kayaked, cycled at Cat Ba Island and visited a pearl village. We learnt so much here and even though the sun didn’t shine for us, its beauty was just as breathtaking and maybe almost more mystical in the misty cloud and shades of grey.
