Sometimes artistic choices don't pay off. And this was one of those occasions!
Challenge number three was about creating either a High Key image, so using lots of bright, light tones OR a Low Key image using darker, more subdued tones.
As you can see I opted for Low. Zip's expressions generally lean towards serious / questioning / curious which in turn lean towards (I think) a more 'moody' kind of image. Put it this way...unless he is in action (& then he has a crazy funny smiley face!) he is not one of those dogs who wears a permanent smile on his face!
And I made two choices:
1. Zip is a 'blue-brindle' Whippet. Some days his coat looks silvery, some days blue & some days the fawn in his coat makes an appearance! It all depends on how the light catches him. We were having a 'split-tone' kind of day which is evident in the image...and guess what...I liked it! I thought the weirdness was in keeping with the 'mood' of the shot, mysterious & spooky. So I decided not to tone down the fawn. Mistake #1! Apparently it looks a bit too weird! ๐
2. The crop - so I faffed over the crop for ages. There is a tiny little marking at the top of the main column and I liked it, so I decided to crop accordingly. Mistake #2!! The judges thought there was a bit too much space at the top. ๐คทโโ๏ธ
Those two choices stopped my image from making the shortlist. So I will make those tweaks and re-submit.
Being creative means accepting that your work is not going to be everyone's cuppa tea! And that's ok ๐
Just to re-cap what this is all about...I've undertaken a personal educational challenge, the follow up to Embark. Every two weeks we will be given a theme to shoot & edit, with direction from world leading pet photographers on how to achieve this. The most important & invaluable part of this for me is the feedback we get after every challenge...what we did right & what we could improve on.
And why am I doing this? Apart from the fact that it's fun (it really is!!!) whatever I learn from these courses I hope to bring that experience to my client sessions
