Should i return it?
Nikon 50mm 1.2 S Vs 1.8s
So for ages I have been thinking i would love the very expensive Nikon 50mm 1.2 S lens for its quality and shallow depth of field.
Everyone who has one raves about it apart from being big & heavy.
Today I received one and tested in my studio against the 50mm 1.8 S version that i already have which is low cost, small and light.
Sharpness wise for shooting fashion and environmental portraits there is nothing discernable in it. The angle of view is marginally different but nothing to worry about. Slight contrast difference but again nothing much there so it all comes down to the shallower depth of field. In this example the shot on the left (1.2) the ear is slightly out of focus and this does give the image a different feel but i don't tend to attempt close up portraits or beauty these days and prefer environmental fashion work.
So is having this lens really a good idea? Is it being bought by spec chasers or people who remember that in the old days the 1.4 lens was always a better lens?
Even when you do want a shallow depth of field there is a point where it is too shallow.
Not sure who on earth will see this (thanks FB) let alone read it but interested to know what others think.
I think i am just about to decide to return it .....
