Beneath. My “Immersive” project. Class of 2026. Ocean based ICM. From a couple of weeks ago on the South Wales coast. A moving camera, long exposure, and waterproof housing.

I love this project for its sense of wonder. Over the years I’ve built up a pretty strong sense of the kind of thing that might happen, given conditions, wave states, and my own camera movements.

Then something happens between you and Mother Nature that completely surprises you. And reminds you why you decided to do the project in the first place.

This is one of those.

I love using what’s in a place. The textures. The raw materials. What’s there. When it’s there.

The organic repurposing of elements and feelings, on location, at the time. In camera.

I started working with multiple exposures back in 2012, at the same time I started working with ICM.

There’s a similar territory here for me, the starting-with-one-thing-and-ending-with-another-ness of it, the thrill of taking what man and Mother Nature offer up and seeing what else you can make with it.

The journey to an unknown destination, starting with the germ of an idea, launching yourself down the rabbit hole and seeing what’s at the end of it.

Sometimes that’s working with the sense of a place, sometimes with a feeling. Sometimes it’s making something different entirely, sometimes just a tiny little organic nudge in the direction of the abstract and unexpected.

On location, at the time, in the moment.

I was lucky enough to get out to Venice with the family a few months ago. Hadn’t been able to get back out there since I went Inter-Railing many many (many) moons ago. What. A. Trip. Absolutely blew us away. Total one off. Beautiful beautiful.

Magnificent canals obvs, and some truly astonishing history, but so so much more.

So many delicious details, hiding in plain sight.

8 seconds of Dunstanburgh. Intentional Camera Movement. More new work.

I’ve always loved extended shutter speeds. I started out with long exposure seascapes back in 2008/9, and gradually found myself drawn into the ICM world a couple of years after that in 2012, having come across the beautiful work of Doug Chinnery.

I love the nuance of longer shutter speeds, particularly with ICM. Time to blend in even the sharpest of edges, that sense of where does one thing end and another begin. The softness of it. The stretchy, pulsing, extended feel of it. The muted, but unmistakable, sensation of space and time merging.

And I’ve always loved the quiet colour palette you so often get in Northumberland. I grew up here, and it never leaves you. Low cloud and heavy seas. The understated greys, the steely blues, the soft unshouty rooted majesty of it all.

So here it is. 8 seconds of it. Strong, silent, moodily persistent and very present.

Abstract. In Camera Multiple Exposure. Oban to Castlebay ferry. More new work.

I always love a ferry trip. There’s the sense of impending adventure, the feels. The sensation that something really pretty exciting is about to happen, but you’re just not quite sure what.

A bubble of possibility, floating through space and time.

I always find them properly lush places for a project in their own right. A camera, a subject, and 5 hours to investigate it.

As I’ve mentioned here before, I do all of my Multiple Exposures in camera, and have done since 2012. I love the immediacy of it, the jeopardy, and the joy of working on location in real time. Using what you have, working with what you’re given. There is an organic quality that comes with it, an imperfection, that I absolutely love. Keeping it real as much as possible.
