Finding order in the chaos 🕰️

Brighton Clock Tower.
Rather than trying to remove all the distractions, sometimes I’ll deliberately include them. The trick is keeping something recognisable for your eye to settle on.

A clean composition isn’t always a better composition.

Sometimes the chaos is what makes the photograph. 🙌

Brighton ☀️🖤

Yes, I do occasionally take photos before the sun goes down. 😂

Daytime photography is a bit of a challenge for me. I’m so used to working with darkness and isolated light that having everything illuminated feels a little strange. I will usually shoot early morning or late afternoon if this is the case!

But it’s good to push yourself outside your comfort zone.

Tips for shooting the London Underground 📷

The Underground is one of my favourite places to photograph, especially when the weather is boring and the light is flat!

A few things I’ve learnt along the way:

• Find the light first. Look for illuminated signs, platform lights and train doors. Then wait for someone to step into it.

• Don’t be afraid of dark shadows. I expose for the highlights and let the darker areas fall away. You don’t need every detail visible.

• Find your composition, then wait. Escalators, tunnels and platforms are full of leading lines and symmetry. Get yourself lined up and let the people come to you.

• Embrace high ISO. I’d rather have a sharp, noisy image than miss the moment worrying about grain.

And finally, be considerate. People are just trying to get somewhere, so don’t block their way for a photograph. 😂

I could spend hours photographing underground stations. The architecture, artificial light and people passing through make them some of my favourite places to shoot.

And the best part? It’s consistent in every way.

It’s all about the light 💡
Give me an ordinary street, a boring building or something most people wouldn’t look twice at.

With the right light, almost anything can make an interesting photograph.

That’s what I’m looking for when I’m out shooting. Not necessarily interesting places, but interesting ways to photograph them.

London in the rain. ☔️🖤

Most people head indoors when the rain starts. I’m usually heading out with my camera.

Wet streets, reflections, people rushing for cover. It’s pretty much everything I love about street photography.

I don’t really worry about my camera getting wet, but when it’s properly chucking it down, I tend to stick with prime lenses.

I’ve got this irrational fear that zooming in and out will suck water into the lens. 😂

Give me a rainy evening over a sunny afternoon any day. 🙌
