Sometimes, it feels like we are in a futuristic cyberpunk movie from the 90s. Ai's presence looms and humanity flounders disconnected, and as devisive ideologies splinter us and the news feels alienating and dark.

This shoot was inspired by the idea of peacefully floating through space as if in a dream lit by the neon lights and glow of the ever-present cityscape. As we question where we are going and why we are here we crave inner peace and connection the same as so many generations have done before us. It is different times, but our humanity is the same.

Hestia is the keeper of the inner flame. This archetype focuses on radical inwardness and spiritual grounding. Her "dark" aspect is her quiet withdrawal from societal demands and the noise of achievement to tend to her own inner space.

Among the chaos in the world, she lets herself float into a dreamy inner creative world much like a dancer focusses on perfecting her craft which is a welcome peace from the tensions of the outer world.

Thank you to the incredible Wings for letting me photograph you. You are inspirational as ever.

March Meet the Maker felt like the right moment to tell the story of how I became the artist I am today — in two chapters, across two countries, following one stubborn pull toward light and creativity.
This is me, with my first camera! Midsummer in 1982 or ’83. It was a birthday gift. I’m wearing a jumper because I had chicken pox, and because UK summers were cooler than what I was used to in Canada.

It's wild to think what that camera would come to symbolise to me so many years later in life?

Since I was very small, I always knew I was an artist. Art wasn’t something you do — it’s something you are. The adults in my life didn’t always approve, but there wasn’t much they could do about it. I look at the world sideways, watching light everywhere I went. In galleries I’d study it as much as the the artworks it lit up, I’d obsess over reflections, sunsets, and moonlight. I’d watch how light had moods and personalities as it changed during the day or when the weather shifted. I noticed how theatre lighting told its own story. I loved making shadow puppets, and obsessed over colour, and felt emotions as textures. I didn’t have the language for it yet, but I was already studying light like a photographer.

Much to my parents’ dismay, I chose to study art at university instead of something “practical.” (Grown up me understands their worries; young me didn’t care.) I wanted out of rural Canada too. I wanted to experience the big city lights, and the chance to figure out what “being an artist” really meant.
So I moved to Toronto and spent four years sculpting and drawing messy, emotional things, trying to understand myself. I loved being surrounded by other creatives. Most of my classmates made high concept, intellectual work; mine came from the subconscious — texture, instinct, aesthetics, the joy of making. I didn’t have an agenda.

When I graduated in 1998, I still didn’t know who I was, but I knew there was more out there. I went back to my parents’ house in rural Canada and started planning a big trip across the ocean to the UK, where the art history felt closer and adventures were ahead!

And that’s where Chapter Two begins....
