While I was out looking for Barn Owls before sunset, this Little Dipper caught my eye.

Using a slow shutter speed—just enough to capture the flow of the water without affecting the sharpness of the dipper—I managed to capture this image.

Located in my garden, what’s left of the lavender on a rare sunny day in the northeast of England.

I didn’t have much to edit on this, it was taken with my macro lens to achieve a shallow depth of field, bringing the focus onto the subject.

I’ve opted for something a little different with this edit — something a bit out of the box for once.

The image was edited in Lightroom using basic adjustments, with added contrast to help the subject pop, and then finished in Photoshop to create an oil-painting effect. Most of this effect was removed from the main body of the sea eagle, leaving it primarily on the wings.

Caught in a split-second moment of stillness — this majestic sparrow hawk locked into a flawless portrait stance.

The natural backlight adds a subtle rim glow around the plumage, while a shallow depth of field isolates every sharp feather detail against a buttery, blurred background.

Sometimes the best shots are the ones where the subject composes itself.

Freezing a split-second moment as this kingfisher bursts from the water.
High-speed shutter, perfect timing, and a bit of luck—nothing beats the thrill of photographing fast-moving wildlife.

Love how the crisp water droplets contrast with the smooth bokeh in the background, and how that burst of color cuts through the frame.

Where crisp feather detail meets soft, diffused fall light, the blue tit posed as though it understood the assignment. Perched delicately on a slender branch, its vibrant blue crown and wings stand in beautiful contrast to the warm, muted palette of autumn behind it. Every tiny feather is rendered tack-sharp, from the subtle gradients of yellow on its breast to the fine contour lines along its wings.

A gentle, golden backlight wraps around the bird, producing a soft rim-light glow that separates it perfectly from the background. The shallow depth of field melts the autumn foliage into a smooth, creamy bokeh — a blend of ochre, russet, and burnt orange tones that create the perfect natural backdrop.

The composition sits with balanced negative space, drawing the eye straight to the subject, while the exposure captures both highlight detail and shadow texture without compromise. It’s the kind of moment where wildlife, colour, and light align effortlessly — the blue tit perched in perfect stillness as if posing for the lens.

Autumn’s Perch

Bathed in soft autumn tones, this blue tit stands out against a warm, bokeh-rich backdrop — a perfect blend of color contrast and seasonal texture. The golden light enhances every feather detail, while the rusted chain adds a touch of character and decay.

Woodland birds are easily taken for granted, their presence so familiar we forget to look closely. But from the nuthatch’s nimble movements to the robin’s confidence and the Blue tit’s vibrant hues, each reveals a unique story of life in the trees — an absolute bonus against the backdrop of autumn colours.
