This is what it actually looks like. Not staged confetti falling perfectly for the camera. The real thing, mid-chaos, petals catching the light, everyone letting loose at once.

You can’t fake that grin. You can’t ask for it either.

This is the moment everyone’s been holding their breath for since the vows finished, and it just erupts. I don’t direct this bit. I just get in the right spot, keep shooting, and let it happen exactly how it happens.

This is what happens when I stop trying to get “the shot” and just let two people be near each other.

Nobody told her to laugh. Nobody told him to lean in like that. I just watched, waited, and caught the moment they forgot I was even there.

It’s easy to think a photo like this needs a plan. It doesn’t. It needs two people who genuinely like each other, and a photographer who knows when to stay quiet and let it happen.

Real moments, with a few proper bangers in there. This one’s all moment.

Everybody at this wedding knew they was expecting. It wasn’t a secret, it was already part of the celebration.

So I asked if they wanted to bring the scan photo along, so that even though this little one wasn’t due for months yet, they still got to be part of the day somehow. Tucked into a photo, right there with everyone else who came to celebrate.

That’s the bit of this job I love most. It’s never just about the big, obvious moments on the list. It’s about noticing the quiet details that matter to the two of you, and finding a way to include them, even the ones nobody would think to ask for.

One day, this baby is going to see this photo and know they were there too, right from the very start.

This is not a smile she gave me. It’s one I caught.

Look at her. That soft morning light catching one side of her face, the veil framing her like it was made for this exact moment, and a smile that reaches her eyes before it even gets to her mouth. She has no idea how beautiful this look is. That’s exactly why it’s the one.

There’s a world of difference between a smile you’re asked for and a smile you catch. A smile you’re asked for looks like a smile. This one, looking off camera at someone she loves, unguarded, completely herself, is something else entirely.

This is the whole reason I don’t pose people for portraits like this. The second I say “smile for me,” I lose this. So I don’t ask. I just watch, stay ready, and wait for the real one to show up on its own.

She didn’t need to try. She just needed someone watching at the right moment.

I got recruited into a group called The Slags at a wedding.

Every wedding, there’s a group of women who run the entire day and nobody else clocks it. This time, they had a name. The Slags. And somehow, by the end of the night, they’d recruited me.

I don’t know how it happened. I don’t know what the initiation involved. I just know I left that wedding an honorary member, and genuinely a bit proud of it.

This is exactly why I do the job the way I do it. I’m not stood at the edge of the room with a long lens, watching from a distance. I’m in it. Getting adopted by nans, joining unnamed friendship groups mid-reception, ending up in whatever chaos your family and mates are creating that day.

Turns out that’s also when the best photos happen. When you’ve stopped noticing the camera because you’re too busy trying to work out if the woman next to you is serious about the name.

Nobody told her to laugh like that.

This is what happens when I stop directing and just let two people be close to each other for a second. No pose, no “look this way.” Just him leaning in, her cracking up at something only the two of them know, and me quick enough to catch it before it passed.

This is the eighty percent. The real, unscripted stuff that happens when a couple forgets there’s a camera anywhere near them. It’s not flashy. It’s not built. It’s just true. And it’s the reason people cry looking back at their gallery years later, not the posed ones, the ones exactly like this.

Hotel, Restaurants & Weddings is stunning on its own. These two made it look even better.

That staircase curving round on both sides, the lantern hanging dead centre, mosaic floor underneath, it’s a properly grand setting. But a grand room needs the right two people stood in it, or it’s just architecture. The moment they stepped into that hallway together, dress fanned out, the two of them wrapped up in each other and barely noticing the building around them, that’s when the room actually came alive.

This is the bit I love. Not just capturing a beautiful venue. Capturing a couple who make a beautiful venue feel like theirs.

You do not need to be the world’s best posing couple to get photos like this.

Exhibit A: Dan.

Bless him. The man has the natural rhythm of a broken deckchair. Doesn’t know what his hands are for, stands like he’s bracing for impact, and somehow still manages to look like he’s mid-arrest in every candid. And yet, every single time, we got there.

Because posing isn’t really the point. Looking like you actually like each other is, and even Dan can manage that bit.

Truth is, me and this man have the most inappropriate banter of any groom I’ve ever shot. The kind of wind-up you’d only get away with with a brother 😂 Genuinely one of the funniest days I’ve had on the job, mostly at his expense.

But under all the piss-taking, banter, telling me to die and everything else he did pretty well I’d say, well Rachel made him look good I suppose 😂

So if you’re worried about being awkward in front of the camera, don’t be. If Dan can look like this, anyone can.

Golden hour outside an old country church, and light like this doesn’t need any help from me.

They were just walking and talking, laughing about something I never quite caught, while the sun did all the work behind them. No posing needed. Just two people, genuinely enjoying each other, in the kind of light you can’t fake and can’t force.

This is what true-to-colour actually means. Not a filter that makes everything look golden. Real light, at the right moment, shot honestly. The warmth in this photo is the warmth that was actually there.

Moments like this are why I never rush a couple off to the next thing. Sometimes the best photo of the day is just two people walking somewhere beautiful, being exactly themselves.

Some of my favourite photos happen right before the sky decides what it’s doing.

Look at that cloud rolling in behind them. We genuinely didn’t know if it was about to open up or clear off completely. Turned out to be neither, it just sat there, moody and brooding, while that warm streak lit up the horizon underneath it. You couldn’t plan a sky like that if you tried.

This is why weather never worries me. A perfect blue sky is easy. A sky doing this, uncertain, dramatic, is a gift if you’re ready to use it the second it shows up.

So we grabbed two minutes, one dip, one kiss, right in the middle of it.

True colour, real light, whatever the sky’s doing. That’s the job.
