Can I say something a bit blunt?

When women tell me they’d love to do a shoot but don’t have the confidence, I want to point out that’s exactly why you should do it.

Nobody arrives at my studio feeling fabulous. Not one woman. They arrive nervous, apologetic about their body, convinced they’re the exception to every good result they’ve seen — so down on themselves, and for so long, that they genuinely can’t believe anything is going to change.

And then it does.

Watching the transformation of a woman who didn’t believe in herself, and then seeing her face when I show her the back of the camera — that is the most joyous part of my job. Every single time.

Yesterday a client emailed me after her shoot. She’s 61. She wrote: “Who’d have thought at 61 I’d do a bo***ir shoot. You showed me I can do anything.”

A recent Google review said she had to look twice at her own photos because she couldn’t believe it was her.

A lady last week filled out my enquiry form wanting to “make me forget myself, make me feel like someone good, just a perfect day.”

That’s not someone who has confidence. That’s someone who wants to find it.

I have never, not once, had a woman leave my studio who regretted coming.

The ones who regret it are the ones who didn’t.

💖 We’re looking for just 50 women in their 50s, 60s and 70s (especially those who usually hide when a camera appears) to take part in our latest Ageless Over 50 Project.

We’d love you to be one of them. We’re already over halfway full.

Do you want to know the question I’m asked more than any other?

It’s not “What do I wear?” 🤷‍♀️

It’s not “What do I do with my hands?”🥺

It’s not even “do you have fizz!”
🥂😉

It’s this:

“Please tell me you’re going to Photoshop me.”🙏🙏

Every. Single. Time.

And my answer?

“Probably not in the way you’re imagining.”

Because of course we polish things.

You’ve had your hair done.
Your makeup done.
I’ve spent years learning lighting, angles and posing.

I’m absolutely trying to show you at your best.

But I’m not interested in turning you into a completely different woman.

I’m not removing every line you’ve earned.
I’m not shrinking you three dress sizes.
And I’m definitely not giving you that strange plastic-skin look that makes everyone resemble a slightly startled mannequin.

What I am going to do is show you what happens when a woman stops standing at the worst angle, under the worst lighting, pulling the same face she does when she’s trying to work out why the printer isn’t working.

Turns out she’s rather gorgeous.

Funny that.

So yes, there’ll be a little polish.

There’ll be a bit of magic.

I’ve just had the loveliest few days. Camping with the whole family, grandkids included, in this ridiculous heat. Joyous chaos. I genuinely tried to switch off, which anyone self-employed knows is basically an extreme sport.

Ive come back raring to go. More enquiries for the Ageless Over 50 Project, which is filling up fast. Only 15 slots left before I stop advertising on Facebook!

And there it is. Facebook.

I don’t talk about this much, but behind a lot of the ads you scroll past is just a small business. One person. Trying to get heard in a very loud room.

This week I got a comment on an ad calling me exploitative. That one stung. I’m a 64-year-old woman photographing women who feel invisible. Exploitation isn’t really my angle.

Then there’s the enquiries. I follow up by email, WhatsApp, phone, whatever works for you. And then… nothing. I know ghosting is just how things are now. I know it’s not personal. But it’s only me on the other end. A quick “not for me, thanks” genuinely makes a difference to a real human being’s day.

I’m not after sympathy. I just want to take photos and help women feel a bit better about themselves.

Finding those women, though is bloody exhausting.
