Another day, another snowstorm (over the weekend, that is). This one was accompanied by a solid sleet fall. The yard became an ice rink keeping me indoors. But the birds were lively around the feeder and this fella took a chance at the nearby frozen berries. It was comical to watch it maintain its balance while reaching out with its beak, and I was able to capture the action. When all was said and done, he just sat there, beak stuffed, and looked my way.

The moon has been in a good position to rise above the trees outside my front window this week, but given a cloudy forecast and the chance of snow showers today, I didn’t think I’d be able to see it. Glancing outside tonight, through the cloud cover, I saw the brightness that perigee provided. Patience paid off and the clouds dissipated enough for me to be able to capture its fullness.

Feeling very blessed today! As I stood in the kitchen making coffee this morning, I glanced up to see a beautiful red cardinal staring at me. It was sitting on a branch of a tree I planted about 10 or so years ago, which only in the last two years has matured enough to produce flowers and berries. In the past, I would have immediately run away to grab my camera, only to find the bird had flown away. I knew to be in the moment and just enjoy the Cardinal’s presence. Suddenly, it leapt upward, grabbed a berry from an overhanging limb and flew off. The rush of excitement I felt did not go unappreciated! The visual will stay with me forever.

A short time later, while working in my home office, I spotted a bird land in the same tree. From the opposite side of the house, I picked up my camera, feeling hopeful, and off I went. This time, it was a female Cardinal, perched comfortably below a limb that had the remnant of a frozen berry hanging nearby (it was about 19 degrees Fahrenheit outside).

I lifted the heavy lens and took a couple of images. Too bright, I changed settings, hoping she would not fly away. As I snapped away, she reached up to nibble the berry. Several times. That same rush of excitement came over me again! And I knew it would be special. Back to work I went without the temptation to look. Awhile later on a quick break, I scanned through and saw this….

Whether I take a photograph or not, the feeling is the same. Make sure you take time to be in the moment. Other (photographic) moments will come. ❤️

Last night, before the clouds rolled in to bring our latest snowstorm this morning, I looked out to see the moon rising. Not quite as full as last week, it moved slowly through the trees, creating beautiful silhouettes of the branches. I saw Jupiter, its tiny brightness not far away from the moon. When this cloud showed up, it brightened the scene a bit, but the scene remained moody.

Then this afternoon, after leaving work early to get home before the roadways became slick, I noticed all the varying shapes created by the snowfall. I liked the lines in a tree I planted years ago with some of the season’s bright berries still hanging on.

Both extreme natural scenes but forever connected. đź’•

Even with the “no go” flight that left me feeling deflated, and the touch-and-go weather system that followed, leaving me literally sand-blasted on the beach, it was a worthwhile journey the following day. Back in October, I flew to Sable Island with Joyce and Sandy and six others, including the pilot, to spend the day looking for the wild horses that live there. This has been something I’ve dreamed of for years, but it never came to pass. But it all fell into place at the right time in my life.

The small no-frills airplane took off and landed on the beach of the crescent-shaped strip of land. There were no trees. Just dunes, sea grasses and some freshwater ponds. Other than researchers in a small complex of buildings in the center of the island, whom we saw only briefly, we were the sole occupants on the island.

There’s an indescribable feeling that fills your soul in an environment where survival is everything. The vastness of an endless beach. The sound of the air current rustling in the high, grassy dunes. And the violent slam of white caps against the shore. My ears captured the whistles and rhythms of the wild winds blowing that day.

Seeing the horses who live in this harsh terrain was such a special encounter. And had it been a perfect-weather day, I don’t think I would have come away with the same experience. It was difficult to endure the constant 25-35 mph winds. When in the beach locations, I got sand in my eyes and in my mouth. My face was wind-burned. I felt less of all that further inland, behind the protection of the dunes. But these horses are used to it.

Seeing this stallion on the top of one of the dunes, I admired him while taking photos from a distance away. It wasn’t until recently when I started going through the images did I notice his cheek. A fresh wound, likely from another stallion, caught me by surprise. Other images, when I zoomed in more closely, revealed similar wounds. I felt disturbed by it. But I’ve come to realize it’s part of their lives. There is no human intervention. The Sable Island horses survive and thrive.

Lake’s Breath (Two Jack Lake)

Heading out before dawn, even in the dark, my eyes adjusted enough to make out the fog-shrouded mountains. The moon, having lost its fullness, still shone brightly in the sky high above the evergreens. 🌲 As daylight revealed more shapes, the temperature remained sub-zero as the fog and clouds held tight to the landlocked trees, creating an ethereal calming view.
