π One flight. Multiple datasets. A much clearer picture of a watercourse.
This is a small example of what can be achieved from a single UAV LiDAR survey and why the value of drone surveying goes far beyond simply capturing aerial imagery.
For this watercourse, LiDAR provides the ability to capture detailed 3D information through areas of vegetation, helping reveal the underlying terrain and features that may be difficult to identify from conventional aerial imagery alone.
The image shows the same location from the same perspective, represented in three different ways:
Gaussian Splat: creating an immersive 3D representation of the captured environment.
RGB Point Cloud: millions of points combining 3D spatial information with colour from the imagery.
Classified Point Cloud: the data categorised into different features, helping separate ground, vegetation and other elements within the survey.
And this is just a small sample of the outputs that can be generated from one carefully planned UAV LiDAR survey.
For flood risk assessment and watercourse surveying, detailed terrain information can help provide a better understanding of channels, banks, surrounding ground levels and the wider environment, creating valuable geospatial data for further analysis and modelling.
At Red Kite UAV, we don't just collect drone data.
We turn UAV data into accurate, usable geospatial information.
From LiDAR and photogrammetry to classified point clouds, terrain models, 3D datasets and spatial analysis, we can support projects from initial data capture through to final deliverables.
