At first glance it looks like a tiny hummingbird, but it's actually a moth!
Unlike most moths, the hummingbird hawk-moth is active during the day. It hovers in front of flowers while drinking nectar through its long, straw-like tongue, beating its wings around 70–85 times per second.
Fun facts:
It can fly forwards, backwards and hover just like a hummingbird. Its tongue is often longer than its body and curls up like a spring when not in use. Although common around the Mediterranean, they migrate north every summer and are regular visitors to the UK.
These incredible little pollinators are completely harmless and help many wildflowers and garden plants reproduce.
The Pipistrelle Bat is one of Europe's smallest bat species.
By day it sleeps tucked away in cracks, roofs and tree hollows, emerging at dusk to hunt insects using echolocation. It weighs just 3–8 grams, which is about the same as a £1 coin. It can eat thousands of mosquitoes, midges and other insects in a single night. They often return to the same roost year after year.
Bats are incredibly important for healthy ecosystems, helping to naturally control insect populations.
