Ratworks Leather

Ratworks Leather I produce both modern and historical leather goods. To see what I have currently available click the link to my shop, and watch this page for updates.

I started working with leather in 2013 as part of a living history society, and haven't looked back since. Every day I wake up excited to work on something new and push myself to constantly improve my skills and my work. In the past I have specialised in making items for Norman re-enactors using tools and techniques of the early medieval period, and this is something I still do. I have also now br

anched out into making modern items using contemporary tools and techniques. Have a look through my photos to get an idea of what I can make. I update this page regularly with items that go up for sale on my webshop, along with tests, experiments, and new designs I'm working on. If you see something you like but is not available currently, get in contact either through Facebook, Etsy or my e-mail, and I'll happily see what I can do for you.

In the process of moving house and moving workshop I forgot about this page for, what, two years? Quite some time, but none of it spent idly. Over the past two years I've been changing how I approach the craft and pushing myself to try harder and harder projects, some of which you can see below.

Soon I hope to have more on sale, in particular more bags and pouches. I currently have all my old stock available for sale, along with some new items I've made recently. As new items are finished and listed I'll be posting about them here, as well as on my Instagram.

I've also been thinking more about what I want to do with this page. In a past life I'd made some how-to and some step-by-step guides, and I've been missing those a little recently. So I'm going to try and post more 'building-of' stuff here, photos and information that show more of the process from design to finished product. If that kind of thing interests you, you'll be able to find it here as often as I can put it up.

Earlier this month I got the chance to take a course with ANA Period Shoes to learn how to make historic turnshoes. For a first pair, they turned out pretty good- the fit well at least!
These are a 12th century design, made using the historical tools and techniques. This was a great learning experience for me, and something I intend to do more of in the future.
All credit to Ana to being a patient and generous teacher, you can find her amazing work here: https://m.facebook.com/pages/category/Product-Service/ANA-Period-Shoes-1712949595651246

About a year ago I made a messenger bag on a leathercraft course, and I always meant to get round to making more. Well, I finally decided to get one made, and I’m fairly pleased with the results.
It’s made from 2mm pre-dyed veg-tan, stitched with linen thread, and tough canvas for a shoulder strap. There’s a few changes to the pattern I need to make (that logo is way off!), but once those are done and I get some more material this design will be available for sale.

More details of the new bag, this is my first time designing and making my own bag and it went better than expected. Got a few flaws to iron out, but overall pretty chuffed!

Recently someone asked me if I would make a larger version of my airmail envelope wallet, and this was the result! It’s larger in all dimensions, and has a internal pocket sewn in to hold cards. Right now it’s a one-off piece, but I like it enough to want to make it more available so it'll be up for sale shortly!
